5 DIY Rings - Easy Adjustable Button Rings

Hi guys, in this tutorial I am creating DIY rings made with buttons! They are super easy rings and very affordable too! But the best thing is that there is such a huge variety of buttons out there! Go to your local fabric store and you will be amazed how many different colours, shapes and sizes there are. And if you don't feel like buying buttons, you can always cut them off your old clothes, or ask your family or friends to donate some and BOOM! You are ready to get creative and make tens, hundreds, even thousands of DIY rings for everyone you know!

I really hope you'll enjoy this tutorial on how to make DIY easy rings and that you will have as much fun creating your own DIY rings as I did. I am definitely planning to do more projects using buttons including more easy DIY jewelry! I just can’t get enough! And as you might have already noticed, I am obsessed with DIY rings, especially adjustable ones and also with hot glue! There is just so much you can do! All I’m trying to do guys is to show you what’s possible, I know that you probably won’t find exactly the same buttons as I have, but you can decorate any button the same way and make it look super cool!

Step 1: Materials

DIY Rings materials:

The following tools and materials have been used for all the DIY rings in this tutorial:

blue tack(or polymer clay or something sticky to hold stuff in place), Chain nose and flat nose pliers, wire cutters and also something round to shape the ring band, hot glue, Xacto knife(scalpel) -to roughen the surface of the buttons to help the hot glue stick better (if you use smooth buttons like I have) Without that, you’ll be able to peal the glue off once it cools down.

In addition to these, here are specific materials for each DIY ring.

NOTE: Also guys, all the wires I use are non tarnish(meaning they keep their colour for longer and I buy them from an online store called Palmers Metals)

1)The Blue 'Diamond':

Plastic, diamond heart shaped button

For the band -18 gauge gold plated copper wire (about 4")

For the wire heart - 18 gauge gold plated copper wire (about 1.5” to 2”)

fine gold glitter

clear nail varnish (fast drying top coat from Seche Vite)

NOTE: btw, if you want to apply extra glitter like I did, because I thought the heart needed more sparkle, add it to the wet nail varnish and after it dries, get rid of the excess glitter again and coat with 3 more coats of clear nail varnish)

The 'Flower ring':

18 gauge gold plated copper wire (about 3.5”)

18 gauge silver plated copper wire (3.5”)

NOTE: I would recommend 20 gauge wire instead to make it more delicate)

fine gold glitter

clear nail varnish (fast drying top coat from Seche Vite)

The 'Pink Heart Ring'

Pink glittery heart shaped button made of plastic

20 gauge silver plated copper wire

For the band - 2 pieces of 3.5” wire

For the spiral - 1 piece of 1.5” to 2” wire

Strong adhesive (All purpose glue from Bostik)

small flat back Swarovski AB crystal

The ‘Stripy button Ring'

Stripy button made of plastic

18 gauge gold plated copper wire (3.5”)

3 coats of pink nail varnish

1 coat of my fast drying clear nail varnish

The ‘Silver and pearl Heart Ring'

Silver glittery heart shaped button made of plastic

18 gauge copper wire (3.5”)

3 coats of white pearlescent nail varnish

1 coat of my fast drying clear nail varnish

Step 2: The 'Diamond Heart Ring'

Cut about 4” of 18 gauge wire and fold it in half, then thread both ends through the button holes and bend on the other side. Press the wire flat with chain nose or flat nose pliers and ben then shape it into a ring shape. Cut the excess wire off and using your chain nose or round nose pliers, bend each end backwards to get rid of the sharp edges. Alternatively you can file it down with some sandpaper or nail file. You have a basic, but still good looking ring, but I would like to hide the holes and pretend it’s not a button. Cut about 1.5” of the same wire and create a small heart shape and then use sand paper or nail file to roughen the surface inside the wire heart. Use an Xacto knife or something sharp to roughen the surface of the ring in the place where the wire heart will be. Next I’m sticking some Blue Tack to the bottom of the ring and securing it to my nail pen so that it doesn't move. I also added some to the bottom of my nail pen to stick the pen to the table. You really don’t want it to move. Put the small wire heart to the middle of the button and secure it with a bit of blue tack as well.

And now it’s time for some hot glue and glitter! You will need to move pretty fast, fill the wire heart with hot glue and before it cools down, sprinkle a generous amount of glitter all over it. then let it cool down. Once the glue was cool, I removed the excess glitter and applied a coat of my clear nail varnish. But I felt the heart needed more sparkle, so I added more glitter to the wet nail varnish and then covered it in glitter again. Then I got rid of the excess glitter again and applied 3 coats of clear nail varnish. Done!

Step 3: The 'Flower Ring'

The flower ring has been created in the same way as the diamond, only this time I used 2 different colours of wire (gold and silver 18 gauge wire) and twisted them together. Although I felt the wire I used was to robust for the twisted ring so I would recommend using 20 gauge wire instead.

Then shape the band into a ring shape and cut excess wire off and bend each of the wires backwards again. Apply hot glue to the middle of the flower, sprinkle glitter and coat with 3 coats of clear varnish. I didn’t add and extra glitter to this one and it looks pretty good too.

Step 4: The 'Pink Heart Ring'

The pink hart ring has been made like the flower ring, but I used 20 gauge silver wire to make it. I then created a small spiral, roughened the surface on one side with my nail file and the I used my chain nose pliers to push the middle of the spiral out to create a small cup.

I stuck a piece of Blue Tack onto my dotting tool(you can use pen instead) and used this tool to hold the cup whilst adding some hot glue to it and then turned it around and stuck it to the middle of the button.

Note: I have roughened all the buttons by the way with my scalpel to help the glue to stick.

Then I stuck a small flat back gem on the top of the spiral with some strong all purpose glue.

Step 5: The 'Stripy Button Ring'

This cool stripy ring has been made like the first one and then I added hot glue to the middle of the button and coated it with 3 coats of my pink nail varnish and 1 coat of clear top coat.

Step 6: The 'silver and Pearl Ring'

And this last ring has again been created like the first one, but I added a drop of hot glue to the middle of it and coated it with 3 coats of my white pearlescent nail varnish and one coat of clear one. It looks just like a pearl!
