Introduction: 5-Minute Wordle Costume

About: I am an engineering educator and mother of two little makers who loves developing new projects - both personally and for my children and students to work through.

Have you ever gone all out on an adult costume that is over the top and had to endure the painful walk from your car to your Halloween destination hoping you haven't inadvertently misunderstood the costume guidelines for your event or, worse yet, got the date or theme wrong? I love going over the top for a costume (you should have seen my husband and I rock popular duos like "pigeon and statue" or "dust bunny and broom" in our heyday), but there are also times (like when you are trying to be a casual, fun coworker at the office) when an understated yet topical costume is more preferable.

If you are looking for a quick and easy Halloween costume, this instructable gives you simple instructions for a fun throw-back costume you can put together in just a couple of minutes.

In my experience, a costume that reminds people of a pop culture phenomenon from earlier that year seems to always get a good laugh. Nothing seemed to grip pop culture in early 2022 more than a good game of Wordle, so I decided to use that as the inspiration for my costume this year.

Supplies

  • White t-shirt (Any solid color shirt will work, but white seems to give the best "Wordle" vibe)
  • Sticker paper (2 sheets)
  • Scissors
  • Computer and printer

Step 1: Print the Wordle Squares

To begin, print the attached file (below) on two sheets of sticker paper.

Trim the horizontal edges of each sheet so you have two large stickers that have a 1/8" border in all dimensions (as shown).

Optional modifications: No sticker paper, no problem! You could also use iron-on-transfer paper and then follow the instructions to adhere your transfers to the shirt. No fancy paper at all? You could still make this costume simply by using three markers (grey, yellow, and green) to draw in the boxes!

Step 2: Apply Wordle Boxes to the Shirt

Lay the T-shirt out flat and set the stickers on the shirt to find a placement you are comfortable with. I recommend centering the stickers horizontally and locating them slightly above center vertically, as shown above.

Peel the backing off the stickers and carefully apply them, making sure the fabric doesn't bunch under the sticker as you go.

Step 3: Wear Your Costume

It's as simple as that! Enjoy wearing your costume, but be warned that it will undoubtedly lead to people trying to guess the word in your puzzle all day long (you can really have some fun with people there...).

Just a friendly reminder: Don't forget about your wordle square stickers and send the shirt through the wash without removing the sticker first.

Happy Halloween!
