You want a cool weekend project?? How about a weekend project to do with your kids, to introduce them to the fun world of woodworking? Interested?
Here is a cool table top book rack which is great to keep all those books organized on your table....you don't have much books to keep...no problem...just push it in and it's compact...it would even work as books ends...sounds complicated??? NOT AT ALL!

This book rack is quick and very easy to make.....it's so easy, I did it as a back to school craft project for my kids' school....They loved it!
What's more....you can get the cut list done at the lumber store...All you have to do is drill, glue, nail and paint!

I would love to take credit for this design...but to be honest...it has to be given to some Chinese...cause I saw this at a toy store and was very fascinated...I didn't want to dole out the cash for it ...cause...well I CAN DO IT for less than 1/4th of the price!

ADDED ON 24th August 2013 - Well....there was a no photo policy...so I didn't take snaps at first...but as my entry was rejected for the 'I can do it' , I went back to the shop and sneaked a couple of pictures! Thank God there was one left!

Step 1: Cut List

6 - 1" or 3/4" wide wooden slats about 15" long
4 - 3/4" thick 6"x 6" or 6" x6.5" wooden squares. ( doesn't make much of a difference...except you then know which side is up...easier for kids!)

NOTE : the length of the slats will depend on how long you want the minimum length for your rack....so in my case...the minimum length would be approximately 12" if you were using 1/2" thick wood...then of course the length would be more.

Step 2: Sand and Paint!

If you haven't got your wood cut at the store...now would be a good time to cut and sand all corners.
Once you have done it...Paint the squares how you like it.
When i did this with kids...they loved this part as I thought them to decorate their squares by texturing.
Of course as these students were 8-10 yrs it wasn't gorgeous....but what was important was they enjoyed it :-)
Here I would use masking tape to paint stripes....thought I'd make a small gift for a special girl while making this instructable ;-)

Do not paint the slats...only sand them well and perhaps oil them...painting won't work as when the ends of the book rack slides it would scrape away the paint.

Step 3: Drill, Glue and Nail!

Take 2 of your squares...make sure you have got them in the proper orientation . We would be nailing the under side of the racks first.
Take your slats and place it at the end of both corners of your 2 squares. Drill 2 holes at each end , glue it up and nail.
Do the same for the other 2 squares...but this time place the slats at the opposite ends. Again drill, glue and nail. Please refer to pictures for clarification
Place section A so that part of Section B will be placed inside it...i'm sorry but I don't how to explain this except by pictures.
Place the other two slats so that the slats would be placed alternately.... again ..PICTURES PEOPLE :-D
Now that you have drilled glued and nailed...flip it over so that the slats you have nailed would be on the side..place the remaining slats so that section 'A'' would have a slat across and section 'B' would have a slat across. drill,glue and nail!

Step 4: Kids Diy

I've uploaded some pictures of the kids doing this project and having fun...hope you enjoy seeing it as I enjoyed doing it with them :-)
