Create Your Own Mud Battery / Bouw Je Eigen Modderbatterij

Wat heb je nodig om een modderbatterij te maken? Een schaar, modder, een schaaltje, elektriciteitsdraden (liefst in twee verschillende kleuren), water, carbon doek, handschoenen, kabelstriptang, multimeter om stroom te meten en een veiligheidsbril.

What do need to build a mud battery? Scissors, mud, a bowl, electricity wires (preferably in two different colors), carbon fibre cloth, gloves, stripping pliers, a multimeter to measure the current and safety glasses, just to be sure.

Step 1: Carbon Cloth / Carbon Doek

Maak het carbon doek nat. Knip twee stukken van dezelfde afmetingen uit het carbon doek. Zorg dat het doek groter is dan je schaaltje zodat je het twee keer dubbel kunt vouwen.

Make the piece of carbon cloth wet. Cut two pieces of the same size from the cloth. Make sure that your piece of cloth is twice the size of your bowl, in order to fold it twice.

Step 2: Electricity Wire / Electriciteitsdraad

Pak de twee soorten elektriciteitsdraad erbij. Knip hier twee gelijke stukken vanaf, ongeveer zo lang als je onderarm.

Take the two different colored electricity wires. Cut a piece of bot, in order to get two pieces about as long as your underarm.

Step 3: Strip the Wires / Strip De Draad

Je gaat nu de twee elektriciteitsdraden strippen! Dit doe je met de kabelstriptang. Verwijder aan de ene kant één cm van het gekleurde plastic en aan de andere kant vijf cm.

You are now going to strip the electricity wire with the stripping pliers. Remove about half an inch of the colored plastic on one side and about two inches on the other side of both pieces of wire.

Step 4: Weaving / Weven

Weef nu de kant met het lange stuk gestripte koperdraad door het carbon doek. Maak aan het uiteinde een haakje zodat het beter blijft zitten. Je hebt nu een elektrode gemaakt! Doe dit nogmaals met het andere draad en carbon doekje.

Weave the part with the longer stripped copper wire through the carbon tissue. Make a small hook at the end to keep it in place. You now have made an electrode! Do this again with the second piece of wire and the other piece of carbon cloth.

Step 5: Two Electrodes / Twee Elektroden

Je hebt nu twee zelfgemaakte elektroden. Eén plus en één min elektrode. Deze ga je straks gebruiken in je schaaltje met modder.

You now have two selfmade electrodes ready to use for your battery, one for the plus side and one for the minus side. You will use these in your bowl of mud.

Step 6: Mud, Nice! / Modder, Lekker!

Haal een emmertje modder uit de sloot, verwijder overtollig water. Vul vervolgens het schaaltje met een laagje van één cm modder. Als je wat droger materiaal gebruik maak je eerst je vingertoppen een beetje nat zodat je de modder goed kunt aandrukken.

Get some mud from a nearby place, like from a pond, canal of whatever. Drain out excess water. Fill your bowl with a layer of about half an inch of mud. If you use dryer ground, please wet your finger to press the mud to the bottom.

Step 7: First Electrode / Eerste Elektrode

Leg nu het eerste velletje carbon doek op de eerste laag modder. Dit is de min elektrode. Druk dit goed aan zodat het doekje contact maakt met de modder. Vul de schaal verder met modder. Zorg dat er zo min mogelijk luchtbelletjes te zien zijn.

Put a sheet of carbon cloth with the wire on the first layer of mud. This will be the minus electrode. Press firmly to make contact between the tissue and the mud. Then fill up the bowl with some more mud. Ensure that there are no tiny air bubbles in the mud.

Step 8: Second Electrode / Tweede Elektrode

Het tweede velletje carbon doek leg je bovenop de laag modder. Dit is de plus elektrode. Je batterij is af! Na een paar dagen begint deze te werken. Met de multimeter kun je dit in de gaten houden.

The second sheet of carbon cloth you put on top of the mud. This forms your plus side. You battery is now ready! The only thing you will have to do is wait a couple of days when it starts working. With a multimeter you can measure the electricity that it produces.
