Introduction: STEM Toy: Centrifugal Sprinkler

STEM learning is fun when we relate theories to real-life or even better when we are able to practically perform them. I always enjoy then my teacher includes activities and role play in their lesson. Here in this Instructables, I'm sharing STEM toy based on centrifugal force that I made for my physics assignments.

Supplies

  • Two Plastic Straws
  • Stock Paper Strip, 25cm x 2 cm
  • Spring(I took it from old empty pen)
  • Glue gun and Glue sticks
  • A piece of Craft Wire
  • Cello Tape
  • Scissors

Step 1: Sprinkler Spoke

Poke the stick at right angles in the center of the straw. Mark two points 3 cm from the center and make half cuts.

Bend the two arms of the straw to make a triangle.

Step 2: U Bend

Bend the craft wire in U shape as shown in picture 1 above. Stick the bend straw legs and the craft wire with glue and a piece of cello tape.

Place and check that the sprinkle spoke is moving/rotating freely inside the spring.

Step 3: Turbine

Fanfold a card strip and apply glue on one side. Stick the ends of the strip to make a star-shaped turbine

Step 4: Place the Sprinkler Spoke in the Spring. the Spoke Should Be a Loose Fit in the Spring

Place the sprinkler spoke in the spring. The spoke should be a loose fit in the spring. Fit the turbine on the spoke and glue it in place.

Step 5: Working and Demo

Place the sprinkler in a bowl of water.

On blowing through the straw the turbine will rotate and so will the sprinkler.

Water will climb up the slant straws and water drops will squirt all over like a real sprinkler!
