Introduction: Artificial Spider Web Creation With Hot Glue

About: My name is Dogan. I'm a Doctor now and working at Yale University :D. PhD ended for good. I love building robots and its my life :) I built a giant ATAT Walker, I love biking, scuba diving, playing violin and…

Would you like to prepare your own web ? like spiders ?

First of all, pick a nice spider web picture from internet by simply googling.

After that prepare your materials.

1) Hot Glue Gun

2) Hot Glue (white color) (no more than 1 Kg)

3) Wide Stickers ( I used green but you can use any color to cover the inside of box. Also you can paint it )

Size of the stickers will depend on your desired size of the box, which will cover your spider web.

4) Hot Glue (black color) (5 sticks is enough)

5) A4 size cardboard and scissors

6) Nails (100 of them will be enough)

7) Styrofoam (must be bigger than the size of your spider web. I used 50x50 cm)

8) Glass plate (to cover your box's upper side for nice view) Again, its dimension will depend on your box's dimensions.

9) Syringe with full of water

10) Thin rope

11) Wood box (my box's dimensions were 40 x 40 cm and has the height of 2 cm)

12) Needles (20 of them will be enough)

13) A toy spider :) small one ...

Step 1: Placing Nails to Styrofoam

By looking at your spider web picture, mark the intersection points on the web.

After marking your points, take styrofoam and start to stick nails into styrofoam. You must place your nails according to intersection points that you have marked before. Don't stick too deep. Head of nails should be above the surface of styrofoam at least 1 cm.

After the end of 'sticking nail' process start to tie your thin rope around nails on the styrofoam. See my picture as an example. Don't forget to tie vertical as well.

After this process you must see a web like structure which is almost same as your picture. You can even change the shape of the web in the way you want.

Step 2: Glue Your Shape

In this step we will need syringe with full of water for sudden cooling of hot glue.

Start from center of your shape and glue the roads which are created by rope around nails. First glue the vertical roads. Vertical ones will be our main & supportive connections. After glueing each road, use syringe to pour water on them. You may want help from a friend. While you are pouring glue, you friend can pour water.

Finish the vertical lines first. Then start the cyclic ones. Create your circular part of your webs. Again syringe has to be ready to cool down.If your glue gun toooooo hot and if your glue is toooo liquid like unplug it to cool down. Your glue that is coming out of your gun must be like honey. Its viscosity must be high.

Don't overdose your glue. Don't use too much glue on top of nails

Step 3: Prepare Your Box

I took a wood plate 40 x 40 cm (width and length) and add height of 2 cm to its near sides. Then I cover my box with large stickers. I used green.

Additionally, I used white stickers for outside covering of the box.

There were bubbles inside my green cover. I get rid of them by using small needle. (to blow bubbles)

Creating a box is depending on your imagination. I don't want to limit you. You can paint it, buy it or do other creative things as well.

You can see the pictures of my box in this step.

Step 4: Taking Out Your Web From the Nails

Remember our web is attached to nails and also into rope. Disconnect them by using your fingers :)

Other tools may damage your web.

See the disconnected version in the pictures. I hope you didn't use too much of glue on top of nails. If you use too much of glue, use tweezers for disconnection process.

While you are disconnecting take out the nails not the web. At the end your web must lie on the surface of your styrofoam.

If you damage your web, don't be sad. Use glue to repair it :)

Step 5: Transforming Your Web Into Box

Take your box and close it on top of your styrofoam. Your web should be sandwiched in between box and styrofoam. Than turn it upside down.

Now your web is inside of your box !

Step 6: Connecting Your Web and Your Box.

Prepare some cylinders (maybe 5) by using cardboard. After that cover your cylinders or paint them in the same color of your box or even with different color.

See the picture for understanding what I mean by cylinders. I marked them with red.

Before deciding the number of cylinders and placing them you should glue the ends of your web into walls of your box. If there are unattached ends due to short length of the web use cylinders to support those ends. See my pictures to clarify.

After this connection process finished your web must be stretched. If not try to rearrange ends of the web.

Also add one cylinder to below of the center of the web. With this, your artificial spider web will not touch the surface of the box.

Step 7: Put Your Spider

It is time to place your spider.

Put your spider into somewhere you want. But be careful to not put it on top of the web. Our web is not as strong as real web, so fall of our little spider can harm our web.

I prefer to put it near the web.

Step 8: Placing Glass Plate

After all previous step it is time to place final cover on top of our box. Put your glass plate gently on top of your box. Don't leave fingerprints inside of it.

After adjusting its final place, use your black glue to cover sharp edges.

Now your artificial spider web is ready for presentation. :)

Good luck. :D

Sorry for low quality images. :/
