Colouring Pencil Woggle (Neckerchief Slide)

Ever wanted a personalized woggle (neckerchief slide) with your troop or patrol colours? Here's a project to try at home or your next meeting.

What you will need:

4 Colouring Pencils

Wood Glue

Knife

Ruler or Measuring Tape

Compass

Masking Tape

Drill and 20mm Drill Bit

Nut and Bolt with 22mm Washers

Saw

File

Sandpaper (various grades)

Clear Varnish

Step 1: Cut and Paste

Using the ruler and your knife, cut all your pencils into 4 pieces, approximately 40mm lengths, discarding the sharpened end. You should have 16 pieces (roughly!) the same size. Start Gluing them together, alternating the colours, purple, green, purple, green, etc. (or what ever colours you choose). When you have 5 pencil pieces glued together start on the next row. The second row will have 6 pieces and third will be back to 5. Build up your 'blank' until you have 3 full rows high. You can use masking tape to hold the 'blank' together. Leave to dry, the glue I used needed 24h but but some glues are quicker. Your best bet is to read the label and leave it twice as long!

The Glue needs to be fully dry before the next step, just because the glue is dry on the outside it may not have set on the inside.

Step 2: Find the Center

While you are waiting, you can drill a test hole in a bit of scrap wood. Try your neckerchief in different size holes to see which one fits (I'm using a 20mm drill bit). When your glue has dried you need to mark the center of your blank. When you are happy with your measurements (measure twice, cut once!), use a compass to draw a circle, 27mm diameter (the size of the finished woggle). Place your blank on scrap wood and drill a 20mm hole trough the center. I drilled trough until the bit just broke the back surface, I then flipped it over and finished the hole (preventing 'blowout'). At this stage you might want to check if your neckerchief fits the through the hole.

Step 3: Trim the Fat

Using a hand saw cut away the excess corners. Trimming the blank down close to the circle you drew in the last step. You want to cut away as much as you can, this will save time on the next step.

I knocked a couple of the pencils off with the saw while cutting. I just re-attached with super glue and continued to the next step when it was dry.

Step 4: Nut and Bolt

Place a large washer (22mm) onto a bolt, you may need to 'bulk up' the bolt with masking tape to keep the blank centered. Put the blank on the bolt, then follow with another large washer and a nut. Tighten the nut until it grips the blank so it cant move, be careful not to over tighten and crush the blank.

Step 5: Rounding and Sanding

Insert the end of the bolt into a drill chuck and tighten. Now you can spin the blank like a wood turner! Starting with a file roughly get the blank into a round then start sanding. Holding the sandpaper in a gloved hand press against the spinning blank to smooth. Start with a rough grit, working to finer grit.

Then remove the nut and bolt and sand the ends smooth, you can also round the corners if you wish.

Step 6: Adding the Finish

You may need to sand the inside of the hole slightly. You can do this by rolling some sandpaper into a small tube and using it as a file. When you are finished sanding, clean off all the dust with a cloth.

Apply a coat of clear varnish to the inside of the hole and leave to dry.

When this is dry you can apply two or three coats (allowing to dry in between coats) to the outside of the woggle.

You now have your very own personalized Scout Woggle.
