Creating and Using a Twitter Account

In these instructions we will be going through the steps of making a twitter account and using it to its full potential. Let's get started!

Step 1:

Go on any search engine for www.twitter.com then you can see both arrows for example below that show you can sign up for an account then click on “Sign Up”

Step 2:

It will ask for your name, email and password in order to make an account. Answer accordingly.

Step 3:

It will move on the next page by click on blue bar “Sign Up” and click on “Let’s go!”

Step 4:

It will show suggestions that you want to follow to keep you updated for any news/ideas. You can click or unclick some suggestions before you click “Follow & Continue” to move on the next page.

Step 5:

It will ask you to add a photo by upload your picture or take a picture. If you don’t have any photo, you can change your picture later. Then click on “Skip this step for now” to move on the next page.

Step 6:

On “Find people you know”, you can add your own personal email to add everyone who have twitter account so you can follow and see what they are sharing on their twitter account. You wouldn’t have to if you don’t want to then click “skip this step” to move on the next page.

Step 7:

Before you go ahead to make some changes on your twitter account. Go on your email to confirm it then click on “Confirm Now.”

Step 8:

Then you can see your twitter account and you can make some changes by clicking the orange egg then click on settings or view profile to change your name, add/ post pictures, add more followers and much more.

Step 9:

Click on settings to change your name, pictures, privacy and much more!

Step 10:

When you are done with some changes then click on the orange egg or any picture that you added then you will see “View Profile” to post some comments or photos to share on your twitter account for all your followers to see.

You finally made your own Twitter Account!

Step 11: How to Tweet

1. Type your Tweet into the box at the top of your Home timeline, or click the Tweet button in the top navigation bar.

2. Make sure your update is fewer than 140 characters. Remaining characters show up as a number below the box.

3. Click the Tweet button to post the Tweet to your profile.

4. You will immediately see your Tweet in the timeline on your homepage.

Step 12: How to Retweet

1. Hover over a Tweet.

2. Click the Retweet icon.

3. A pop-up will show you the Tweet you're about to Retweet. Click the Retweet button. The Tweet will then be shared with all of your followers as a Retweet!

Step 13: How to Use Hashtags

People use the hashtag symbol (#) before a relevant keyword or phrase, keeping in mind to not use spaces between words, in their Tweet to categorize those Tweets and help them show more easily.

Clicking on a hashtagged word in any message shows you all other Tweets marked with that keyword. Hashtags can be used anywhere in the Tweet. Anyone who does a search for that hashtag you used may find your Tweet. Use hashtags only on Tweets relevant to the topic.

Step 14: How to Follow People

Type the person's name or username into the search box at the top of your Twitter Home timeline. Your results will show a combination of people and Tweets related to your search.

Click on a username or navigate to a user's profile. Click the ‘Follow’ button when you see it next to a user's profile photo or on a user's profile page.

Step 15: Words of Caution

There are plenty of things that can make even simply trying to use social media end up being dangerous or unfavorable. While most people are there to use the services provided, not everyone is.

Step 16: Hackers

Your whole account can be compromised if someone manages to find out your login information. You can visibly tell if you have been hacked if:

1 .You notice any unexpected Tweets made by your account.

2. Account behaviors you didn't make or approve such as following and unblocking.

3. Received a notification from twitter stating that your account may be compromised, stating that your account information has changed when you did nothing, or that your password is no longer working and to reset it without it having being yourself forgetting it.

There are ways to fix this if you end up believing your account has been hacked. Simply logout of twitter on every device you have it on, including phone apps, request for a password change, and be sure that your email address’ account is secure as well as it is tied to your account.

Step 17: Impersonation

Sometimes you may find an account that is not your own but shares the same, or extremely similar, name as yours and copied photos. Twitter has an Impersonation Policy that helps with this.

While parody accounts are allowed to be made, these other accounts must been seen as deceptive towards others, as in they try to make other users believe they are you, for Twitter to take a hand in permanently suspending the false accounts.
