Crocheted Case for a 7” Tablet

For Christmas, I was given a gift certificate to get the 7” tablet of my choice, once we got the tax return money.  I was happy to wait.  Once the money came, I spent 3 days doing research and deciding on which one I wanted.  Once I spent a little time trying out the two finalists I made my choice and brought it home.  Now, what to do about a case to protect my investment? After much thought, I decided to crochet a case for my tablet.  This is how I did it.

Step 1:

Supplies:
4.5 oz. (128 g) medium worsted weight yarn (I chose dark red)
Size H (4.40 mm) crochet hook
Plastic canvas
Scissors
Yarn needle
Large button

Need to know:
ch = chain
sc = single crochet
dc = double crochet
adct= alternative double crochet turn
T = turn
st = stitches

Step 2:

adct (alternative double crochet turn) is a new/better way to turn and go back on the next row when double crocheting, instead of chain 3 (this leaves a hole in your edge) or then turn and putting a dc in the first place (which can leave a bump in your dc edge). To accomplish an adct, turn to start next row. Single crochet in the first stitch, chain one, then stick you hook in the left leg of the single crochet and make another single crochet. Then go on double crochet with the next stitches in the pattern.

Step 3:

Now to get started on the tablet case:

Ch32 adct T
Row 1 - dc across (32 st) T adct
Rows 2 - 12 repeat row 1

Step 4:

Row 13 - dc across (32 st) across in the front loop of each stitch, T adct,
Row 14 – sc across (32 st) T adct

Row 15 - dc across (32 st) across in the front loop of each stitch, T adct,

Step 5:

Row 16 – 20 Repeat row 1
Row 21 – sc across (32 st) across in the front loop of each stitch T adct
Row 22 – 26 Repeat row 1

Step 6:

Row 27 – working in the front loop of each st *skip one st, dc in next stitch, dc in the skipped stitch (this is the X stitch) repeat from * across the whole row, dc in last st. T, adct.
Rows 28 – working in the back loop of each st, *skip one st, dc in next stitch, dc in the skipped stitch (this is the X stitch) repeat from * across the whole row, dc in last st, T, adct.
Row 29-33 – *skip one st, dc in next stitch, dc in the skipped stitch (this is the X stitch) repeat from * across the whole row, dc in last st. T, adct.
Row 34 – sc across (32 st) T, adct.

Step 7:

Row 35 – sc across attaching the loops left by row12, T, adct.

Step 8:

Row 36 – *skip one st, dc in next stitch, dc in the skipped stitch (this is the X stitch) repeat from * across the whole row, dc in last st. T, adct.
Row 37 – sc across attaching the loops left by row12, T, adct.
Rows 38-48 – Repeat Row 36

Step 9:

Sc the top and bottom layers together, from the corner you ended with down the end and cross the top (you may think of it as the bottom). Cut a 2 inch tail and tie off weaving in the end.

Step 10:

Cut the plastic canvas to fit inside the 4 pockets that have been left open. It shouldn’t be a tight fit. Cut off the ends and sc the top/bottom closed.

Step 11:

Sc all the way around all 3 of the 4 sides. One one of the long edges of the case stop in the middle to ch 20 stitches, then pick up where you left off and finish the rest of the last side.

Step 12:

Straps to hold the tablet in place:
Ch 10
Row 1 - sc2together, sc6, sc2 together
Row 2 – sc2together, sc4, sc2 together,
Cut the long tail and tie off.

Repeat 3 more times.

Step 13:

On the side that is divided in half, place your tablet in the center and hand sew the ends of the straps into place using yarn and the yarn needle. Make the straps nice and tight so that tablet will stay in place.

Step 14:

Fold the divided side and create a 90° angle, pressing the end on to the surface of the solid side. Single crochet a line along where that edge rested. This line will help keep the edge from slipping. One double crochet width away from the first line, single crochet another line. This will keep the tablet from slipping.

Step 15:

Last but not least, sew a button on the side opposite of the side with the loop made from the 20 chain stitches. This is the case closed.
