Introduction: How to Inject Custom Songs Into Guitar Hero III or Aerosmith on Any Wii

NOTE!! COOLDAVID08 has been nice enough to inform us of how we can burn our (legally obtained, of course) wii iso files to dvd+r discs. This will help if you want to use lightscribe dvds, but i dont know the quality. i bought some clearence 10 pack of dvd-r and after 8 minutes of playing, yes i timed it, i would get a disc read failure. anyway, here is what COOLDAVID08 said:

"I have burned 5 wii games succesfully using Imgburn and my laptops intergrated dvd burner. What Imgburn does by changing the booktype is it tricks the wii into reading the DVD+R disk as a DVD-R disk. I dont know if all DVD drives suport it but you go to burn an image and pop in you disk then check the information it should be at DVD+R default. What you do is click on a little yellow open book icon and find your brand of DVD Burner then you change your booktype to DVD-ROM."

** I am not responsible for your wii, and if you dont follow my instructions exactly, your wii may break.**

A video of one of the songs i replace later in the instructable: Welcome home.

In this instructable, you will learn how to install custom songs into a guitar hero 3 legends of rock or guitar hero Aerosmith iso, which can be played on a hard or soft modded nintendo wii. if you dont know what wii homebrew is, or have never heard of a mod chip, Thundaboy1047 would be happy to explain how to homebrew enable your wii. Click here to get to his instructable, and once you have succsefully gotten your wii homebrew enabled, it needs to be able to run backups. A backup is basically the iso taken from an official disk burned to a blank dvd-r. thundaboy also has an ible on this, located right here . after you are done there, you are ready to move to the next step. if you have a modchip, just goto step 1.

Step 1: Supplies List

You will need the following to complete this instructable with sucsess:

1. A wii capable of running homebrew.
2. a computer capable of burning data to a dvd-r. you can download imgburn here .
3. a program called "the ghost". you can download that by going to this page.
4. For the ghost to run, you need codecs. codecs allow your computer to encode, decode, and play music and video of various file extension formats. im sure you have heard of mp3, or mp4, but have you ever heard of ogg audio, or flv video? when you download frets on fire song packs use ogg audio and if you dont have the codecs installed, ghost will not function. period. Vista for windows vista. XP for windows xp. if you have linux with wine installed, you may be able to use the ghost, but unfortunately for mac users, ur screwed cus the ghost isnt made for mac... at least not that im aware of. you can google the ghost mac and see what pops up.
5. A guitar hero 3 or aerosmith nintendo wii ISO file. i dont think that i am legally allowed to distribute a link for this one because that would make me a "piracey promoter" and im a good person. i owned my game before i dumped it.
6. Some frets on fire song folders. go here, make an account, and browse by artist to get song folders.

next step -->

Step 2: Configuring the Ghost

enter the tools folder, and run the audio tool application. install the wav dest filter, and the xbadpcm codec. then click the begin tests button. you should here a guitar solo, then get a poppup box asking if you heard the noise. if you heard the noise, click yes. the box doesnt even pop up if you dont have the codec, so there is no reason for the no. if you have no red X's and all checks, you can continue to the next step.

Step 3: Using the Ghost

open up the ghost.exe and click new project. name it and save it. the working folder is where all the temporary files are stored during conversions. everything is deleted at the end of the program when you exit, but the more songs you do at a time, the more space you need. the game location should be the path to the folder, then a \ followed by your game iso name. the little boxes should be filled in as follows: 1. wii scrubber 2. windows audio 3. Xbadpcm plugin. press next. if you didnt properly fill in the game location or working folder, the ghost will crash and you need to restart. the following display will show you the tiers and songs in them, plus the bonus songs. check the ones you want to replace, then click next. if you click export, you basically get a txt file that has all tier names and song names inside. I will give you one warning: do not replace the boss battle songs unless you fret them your self and include lots and lots of star power areas. i speak from experience, and now i have no way of getting past slash because the song i picked, lip gloss and black, only has 2 star power areas. i already have my song folders, but you need to get yours with the link i gave in the supplies list. drag the song folder on top of the smart button. make sure all of the data is correct, then press next. now here, if you downloaded a song pack with unknown difficulty or basically anything except all, you need to click this to allow the ghost to map the other difficulties. if you click view, you can see how the notes look in guitar hero. the notes with white dots inside are hammer ons and pull offs. any blue section you see is star power. repeat with all songs, then continue down. Here is one of the songs i had checked to fix.

click start to finish up in ghost. depending how many songs you changed, this could take a while. with me doing 2, it took 15 seconds. if you plan on making another version with more songs, click save the project. WOO HOO!!!!11!!1!! next step

Step 4: Finishing Up

you are pretty much done. just take the iso you pointed to is the beggining of ghost and burn it to a high quality, i reccomend sony, DVD-R. That is a MINUS!!! MINUS R!! not plus r, or minus rw. if it isnt minus r, it won work. and burn at 3x.
lets say you want to make two different versions of the same guitar hero 3 game, but want to track your process defferently on each disk. normally if you just burned 2 different ones, lets say the original and a metal version, you would have the same band, and if you played one more than the other, the same progress and score. you can fix this by changing the disk id. normally it is R as in Wii game, 2 letters, in this case gh like guitar hero, and then some numbers. change the numbers, and you get a new save. you can do this by running theghostwiiisotool.exe you can also change the name of the game to show up under the save icon. i havent actually used this tool, but once i do i will document it further.
