Introduction: Making an Over-Cupboard Wine Rack

About: I'm a software engineer for Etsy. I enjoy working with my hands and building things. I also enjoy working with electronics. Halloween is my favorite holiday because it's the only time that EVERYONE tries to…

My fiance and I just moved from an apartment into a rental house and I've been on fire building things in the garage.  The latest project is a simple wine rack to keep the nicer bottles out of the way and use up some of that empty space above our kitchen cupboards.

I started by making a mockup out of cardboard to make sure it'd actually hold wine and fit the available space.

The rack is just 5' of 1x4 and 5' of 1x6 with some 2x4 bracing holding them together.  The rear notches are cut with 3/4" between them and are about 3-1/2" wide which gives me space for 14 bottles in just a hair over 5' of cupboard.  There's really enough room for two rows of bottles up there, but I haven't decided on the best way to add a second layer yet.
