Introduction: 3D Inspirational Wall Art

About: I am a conceptual artist, and my DIY projects are mostly inspired by pop culture (movies, music, sports, TV). I mostly specialize in painting, graphic design, drawing, digital photography, performance art, and…

Make your own 3-dimensional inspirational wall art for your bedroom with plywood, paint, stencils and all kinds of crafty decorations, such as ribbon and rhinestones! This project was inspired by the Good Day Wood Block project found on the Joann's website.

Step 1: Materials

What you'll need to make your own wall art are the following

  • a large piece of plywood
  • acrylic paints
  • paint brushes
  • sponge brush
  • variety of stencils (including large letter stencils)
  • pencil
  • eraser
  • ruler
  • painter's tape (optional)
  • Optional: small rhinestones / ribbon / hot glue gun / foam shapes / yarn / buttons / beads

Step 2: Paint Plywood

First, paint the plywood a solid color and let dry. Then, with your letter stencils, you can trace out the trace out an inspirational word across a piece of plywood with a pencil or just use a sponge and paint to fill them in. I chose the word "HOPE".

Tip: Make sure to choose your word that will fit within the size of your plywood.

You can even experiment with letter placement; make it as busy or simple as desired...just make sure that it is in the center of your plywood.

Step 3: Paint in the Word

Step 4: Add Embellishments

Now, comes the fun part: add some colorful embellishments! You can use stencils of flowers, hearts, stars, or anything else you like to compliment the inspirational word of your choosing! If you want to get even more creative, you can even outline the letters with yarn or ribbon, and add rhinestones, buttons or beads inside the letters for extra bling, and colorful dimension! Make it unique!

Step 5: Display

Once the paint is dry, you can now display it in your room for a fun, colorful inspirational touch to your space! These also make great bedroom / home decor styled gifts!

Here's the breakdown on a few inspirational wall arts that I've made:

For my "HOPE" board, I painted a hot pink background and painted the word with blue. Then, I used some shades of green paint for the leaves, as well as embellished them with coordinating rhinestones. Then, I also embellished the letter with blue rhinestones, and added strips of blue zebra cardstock for some of the straight lines on the H, P and E.

For the "LOVE" board, I used Flesh Tone paint and a few quick strokes of white for added dimension. I painted the word LOVE in hot pink paint and add a few red hearts around it. I also added strips of pink zebra print cardstock for the straight lines in the L, V, and E, and added pink rhinestones. Finally, I finished off with a red feather boa border.

For the "JOY" board, I painted the word using Mandarin Satin paint and added two stars between letters. Then, I added two pieces of orange polka dot ribbon for the top and bottom borders, painted on a few stars and sunbursts, and added several stars and flowers cut from pieces of fabric.
