Introduction: 5in Sanding Disc Organizer
I got aggravated with the storage system I had for my sanding disc, or lack there of. I designed this free standing or wall mountable sanding disc storage organizer. It allows you to see how many disc you have at a glance. A label can be added or maybe I'll design some more holders with preassigned grits on them in the future.
Is this a tool, not technically; but it's for a tool.
Supplies
2 - Scrap Plywood that's 3/4" thick and at least 8"x8"
PLA filament (Enough to make 6 holders)
1/2" dowel, I used oak from my local hardware store
Wood glue
5/8" Brad nails
2 - 1-1/2"x1/4" Scrap Wood (Long enough to connect the top and bottom pieces together)
Tools used are:
Ender 3 V2 (Lots of Patience, unless you machine is dialed in)
Router Table w/ Flush Trim Bit
Drill Press w/ 1/2" Fortsner Bit
Band Saw
Brad Nail Gun
Push-Pull Hand Saw
Step 1:
The first step for me was getting fed up with having to dig for my sanding disc and then realizing I don't have the grit I want to use.
The disc is 5in, so I designed a holder in Fusion 360 with a 5.25 opening. As soon as I got the first holder printed I was able to go out to the shop and make the top and bottom.
I used black Overture PLA filament, but you can use any other color you prefer.
Step 2:
I traced out on a piece of plywood the holder outline and trimmed out a lot of the plywood around the outline. Then I used double sided tape to hold the holder on the plywood, so I can go to the router table.
Step 3:
At the router table I used the flush trim bit and followed the outside of the holder to make the bottom and top match the holder dimensions.
Step 4:
Once the top and bottom shaped out with the router, take the pieces to the drill press. At the drill press with a 1/2" Fortsner bit and the holders still taped in place, use the holder as a guide to line up the drill bit and drill the hole out through the plywood.
Step 5:
After the drill press move over to the workbench and test assemble everything.
I had to sand the dowel down a little. I chucked the dowel up in my drill and used sand paper to sand the dowel down to the desired diameter.
Step 6:
After test fitting everything and making adjustments, disassemble and add woodglue to each end of the dowel put everything back together and put a 5/8" through the plywood and dowel at ecah end to hold them together while the glue sets.
Step 7:
Then take the assembly and the two pieces of scrap wood and connect them together with woodglue and 5/8" brad nails. After the two pieces of wood are installed, take a hand saw and trim the two pieces of wood flush with the top and bottom.
Finally, use an orbital sander to sand as much of the assembly as you can.
Step 8:
Now the 5in Sanding Disc Holder is ready to use or if you want, you ad paint the wood portion of it.
