Introduction: BMW I8 Concept Cake V2

After the success of the first trial to make the BMW i8 Birthday Cake, I created a bigger template which is double the size, with some improvement along the line to make it more realistic.

Step 1: Printout the Template

Printout all the template.

The first template is the base of the car, you will need to make the base by sticking it to a cardboard and then wrap it with Aluminium foil, this will be the base of the car.

The second template is for the cake shape guide, cut it out and also stick it to the cardboard so that it is easier to handle when shaping the cake.

The rest is the template for the fondant.

Step 2: Bake the Cake and Shape It

The cake I use is 22x22 cm with thickness of about 4 cm. I cut the cake in half and stack one on top of the other on the base plate which is covered with aluminium foil, then using the template guide and knife, shape the cake up. To stick the 2 piece together you can use the butter icing. I use a small cap to cut out the round space for the wheels. Take your time to ensure the shape is correct and balance on both side.

Step 3: Prepare the Fondant

1. Melt 150 gr marshmallows with water in microware for 20 seconds, stir the sticky mixture

2. Add 150 gr of the icing sugar and stir using spoon or spatula until it is kneadable

3. keep adding icing sugar (about another 150 gr) until the mixture is kneadable

4. transfer the whole onto the counter on top of baking paper to reduce the mess, knead, knead and knead, while adding more icing until it has consistency like playdoh. Don't forget to oil your hand to ensure that it doesn't stick

Step 4: Knead the Fondant Into Shape to Cover the Cake

You can use food colouring to colour the base colour, make sure you knead it well to allow the colour to mix evenly. Then roll it up thin about 3-5 cm. Then prepare the cake by spreading it with the butter icing, then lay the fondant on top.

Step 5: Cut the Rest of the Shape and Stick It

Shape the fondant, cut along the edges leaving about 1 cm all around, work this to ensure the surface of the car is smooth and tuck the rest under the car. Start cutting the rest of the fondant as per the template and stick on the car using the butter icing as the glue.

Step 6: Add Finishing Touches

Add finishing touches, for the wheel I used Oreo Cookie as the base and wrap it with the fondant icing then using the back of the knife shape the rim, push the wheel onto it's place it should lift up the car slightly to make it more realistic. You can add the small logo and the number plate at the front and back of the car.

Enjoy your great creation and you can brag about it to all your mates.

In this step I didn't use the top template, my initial plan is to melt sugar to create a sugar crystal and shape it like the glass to make it even more realistic, but that is probably for another day.

You can also use the blue tint to tint the edges of the grill and a the front lights.
