Introduction: "BY THE SEA" Fabric Wall Art

About: I'm an International Student Homestay host who loves to teach, cook, garden, write, paint, and create

My home is right near the sea and wanted to create something different for my guest's blue and white bedroom wall.

Supplies

You will need:

  • 1 framed oblong canvas - this one is a bit bigger than A4 size
  • 1 piece of blue-toned paua print fabric to cover the canvas plus extra to cover over the sides and onto the back
  • 1 small piece of dark blue chiffon fabric the height of the frame and half as wide plus extra for covering the sides
  • 1 piece of shiny blue fabric to represent the sea about half the frame size
  • 1 length of white piping cord - twice the height of the canvas plus extra to go over the sides and back edge
  • 4 pieces of paua shell
  • 8 - 9 white pebbles
  • 1 - 2 seashells

EQUIPMENT

  • 1 staple gun with staples
  • 1 pair of sharp scissors for cutting the fabric and cord
  • 1 ruler
  • 1 fabric chalk
  • Clear tacky glue for fabric
  • 1 hot glue gun with extra glue sticks
  • Mod Podge Dimensional Magic

Step 1:

  1. Place the fabric, face side down, onto the worktop and lay the framed canvas onto the fabric
  2. Measure and trim evenly around each side so you have enough fabric to cover the side and come onto the back edge for stapling
  3. Make sure the corners are folded in tightly as shown

Step 2:

  1. Take a moment to position the fabric to allow for the cord and shell placements
  2. Using the ruler, draw a chalk line for the edge of the chiffon,
  3. Line it up just less than 1/4 of the width in from the left side edge
  4. Carefully place a fine line of tacky glue along the chalk line
  5. Next, lay the chiffon edge onto the glue making sure it lies straight and evenly
  6. Trim to fit the frame allowing enough to cover the sides and come onto the back edge for stapling

Step 3:

  1. Using the tacky glue, carefully lay the white cord to cover the edge of the chiffon
  2. Use the ruler for a chalk mark to guide you for the second line of cord
  3. Next, using the hot glue gun, place the pieces of paua shell evenly down the side

Step 4:

  1. Scrunch up the fabric for the sea making sure all cut ends are not visible
  2. Using the tacky fabric glue, attach it to the lower edge of the frame
  3. When this has dried and is secure, attach the pebbles and seashells into the folds using the hot glue gun.

Step 5:

  1. Use the Mod Podge Dimensional Magic to create feature dots on the paua fabric as shown to create extra detail

Step 6:

  1. Now you are ready to hang your masterpiece
