Introduction: Bony Bungee Cord Organizer

Bungee cords tangle easily and are always hooking each other.  This instructable provides a method to organize the cords so that they can be selected easily when needed.

This instructable can be made for the most part with wood you have laying around the workshop.
For interest, I cut the shape of the bungee organizer into the shape of long bones. Optional.

I used poplar wood dowels, but you could use oak dowels if you have them laying around.  Poplar dowels are less expensive.
If desired, dowels could be left out altogether, and pieces of plywood with grooves cut in them could be used.

Step 1: Materials

Plywood, two pieces cut approx 2' x 2" (60 cm x 5 cm)
1/2" diameter poplar wood dowels, 3 pieces cut to 8" lengths, (or 5 pieces cut to 8" length if you don't have a table saw)
2 plywood pieces cut to 2" wide  by 8" long if you have a table saw
Wood glue
Drill bit
Drill
14 screws
Hand Saw or  miter saw
Table Saw (optional)
Band saw or scroll saw (optional)
Tape Measure
pencil
cardboard
Indoor or outdoor house paint (optional)

Step 2: Cut and Drill

Cut the dowels and short pieces of plywood to 8" length, or other length if desired.
Determine spacing of dowels, and mark with a pencil.
Bone Shape
If desired, make a template with cardboard to trace out the end of the bone shape.
For the long part of the bone, use a straight edge and connect to the ends of the bone shape.
Using the scroll saw, or band saw, cut the long plywood pieces into the shape of the bone.
Drilling
Put the two bone pieces on top of each other, and drill through both pieces of wood.
Cutting Slots in the short plywood pieces
The plywood pieces will add stability to the organizer.
If using the plywood pieces instead of the two dowels,  use the table saw to cut grooves in both edges.
The grooves will be used to organize small bungee cords with small hooks.  Large hooks can also fit in the slot if it is made wide enough.  See final picture at the end to see an example.

Step 3: Glue Up

Since clamping these pieces would be difficult, I decided to glue them in sections.
Lay one of the bone shaped pieces on a flat surface.
Put wood glue around the holes, covering the area of the diameter of the dowel and where the short plywood pieces will be located.
Stand the dowels on end over the holes, centering them as best as you can.
Press the dowels down so that they stand up straight.
Allow the glue to dry completely.
Place the other bone shaped board on the flat surface, and apply glue around the holes again as before.
Flip the glued piece over, and join the two pieces together.
Allow the assembly to dry completely.

Step 4: Drill Dowels and Insert Screws

Now that the glue is dry, use a drill and drill bit, and drill through the predrilled holes into the end of the dowels and plywood.
Drill as deep into the dowel as deep as possible.
If holes are not drilled, the dowels will split when the screws are screwed in.
Put screws into all of the holes and tighten.

Step 5: Sand, Paint, and Use

Sand the rough edges
Paint
Use!
Attach bungee cords longest to shortest along the length of the bungee organizer
Avoid putting the bungees on super tight.  You don't want to break the dowels.
