Introduction: Campfire Roasted Stuffed Banana

About: I'm a 41 year old theatrical designer and educator. I have boundless curiosity, chimerical aesthetic, and Sisyphean perseverance. The results of my whimsical adventures can be found here and on my instagram.

So maybe you are tired of smores(I know blasphemy). Maybe you forgot the graham crackers or accidentally purchased mini marshmallows instead of full sized ones. Whatever the reason if you are out in the woods and find yourself scrambling for an alternative dessert that still has a chance of catching on fire. Then this delicious dessert is for you.

Step 1: Ingredients, Tools, and Ideas

For this stuffed banana I thought I might try and get in on the rainbow contest so here is what I used. I have some ideas for other things that you could put in your banana that I will mention after the main list. This dessert is sort of like a taco you can fill it full of all sorts of tasty things. It is truly limited only by your imagination and your tastes.

Here we go

Ingredients

  • one banana
  • peanut butter M&Ms
  • mini marshmallows

Tools

  • Knife
  • Tongs(not shown here)
  • Cutting board or hard clean surface
  • Campfire(not shown here)
  • a spoon(not shown here)

Other ideas for ingredients feel free to mix and match

  • chocolate chips (milk or dark)
  • caramel chips
  • peanut butter
  • honey
  • cacao nibs
  • crumbled graham crackers
  • whatever you think might taste good with banana

Step 2: Sort and Smash

Going for the rainbow effect on the finished product I opted to use peanut butter M&Ms for filling. When cooking the pre instrucatble test bananas I discovered while imparting a great color on the banana the candy shell kept the chocolate from melting and getting properly gooey. So for this instructable I settled on tastiness over aesthetics.

It was through this strenuous testing I discovered the best way to relieve stress and obtain the proper gooey consistency was to smash the M&Ms. So I sorted out a rainbow of colors and got to crushing.

Step 3: Slice and Stuff

Now that I had all my M&Ms smashed it was time to get to work on the banana. I carefully sliced the banana from stem to tip making sure to not cut all the way through the banana. Then pushing carefully on either end of the banana I opened up the banana to reveal where all the candy filling would go. Now that I had a void I carefully filled it with a layer of crushed M&Ms and then a layer of mini marshmallows. Now it was time to play with fire.

Step 4: Playing(cooking) With Fire

The banana will roast directly on the coals. So to expose the coals I shifted the logs around to make a nice little banana nook and placed the banana in it. Now it was time to wait. As the banana cooks there are some visual cues to let you know how things are going. , first the skin of the banana will darken. Then the marshmallows will start to melt and turn golden. Finally eventually you will start to see bubbles around the edges of the slit in the banana. When you see those bubbles you know it is almost time to eat your banana. As the banana was cooking I noticed my marshmallows were unevenly cooking(they are the canary in the coal mine of this dessert) so I made sure to rotate the banana around to make sure it was cooking evenly. Once it started bubbling I gave it a squeeze with the tongs to make sure it was soft and squishy. It took about a minute more of bubbling till it was ready.

Step 5: Open and Dig In

Now that the banana was cooked I took it off the coals and using two spoons opened it up. Like I said earlier after much soul searching I went with taste over aesthetics. As you can see the candy shell still imparted some of its color to the banana while getting properly gooey. This banana was still hot so I let it cool a little and dug in.

I hope you have enjoyed this banana adventure and you feel inspired to make your own awesome campfire roasted stuffed banana. Thanks for taking the time to read this instuctable.
