Introduction: Can Handle
This is my take on a mug handle for standard sized cans. The wide base and belt clip make this a great accessory for fishing, golfing and other hands on thirst inducing activities. If you would like to print this for yourself, the STL file can be downloaded from my Thingiverse page: http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1327463
Step 1: Design
I drew this in Autodesk 3D cad. The measurements in this drawing assume that the parts will be printed is ABS. It still works with PLA but doesn't hold as tight.
Step 2: Slicer Setup
I use Cura as a slicer. The settings I'm using are tailored to a PrinterBot Simple Metal. The only pointers I need to give for this print are to turn the cooling fan off (to prevent warping), and print in a reasonably high density because you will be flexing the arms to lock the can in place.
Step 3: Print
Now its time to print!
As you can see I'm currently printing with a PrinterBot Simple Metal. It is a fairly bare bones printer, but with a couple mods it more than holds its own. Again I want to point out that the FAN SHOULD BE OFF when printing in ABS. This will save you a lot of wasted time and material. I also coat the print bed with hairspray which really helps with bed adhesion.
Step 4: Assemble and Enjoy
When the print is done it is time to assemble the two parts. On the end of the bottom arm there is a square peg. This peg is inserted into the square hole in the round base plate. These parts are meant to be press fit so that glue isn't necessary. You might find that the peg needs a little trimming depending on how the print turned out.
