Introduction: Cardboard Frame Loom

A loom that you can flip over and see the back of your weaving is very helpful in tapestry making. So I grabbed my cardboard and scissors and got to work! This loom tutorial is made with materials you can easily find at home.

Supplies

  1. Rectangular piece of cardboard (I used 9x12 inch)
  2. X-acto knife
  3. Pencil
  4. String
  5. Ruler

Step 1: Cut the Frame

Using your ruler and pencil, draw the rectangle inside the cardboard you are going to cut. I used a 1 inch margin, but you can adjust based on the size of your cardboard.

Then, using your X-acto knife, cut out the rectangle you drew. You don’t need the smaller piece, just keep the frame.

Step 2: Cut the Notches

Using your pencil, mark 1/2” long lines that are 1/4” apart along the short sides of the frame. Then cut the notches with scissors.

Step 3: Warp the Loom

Take one end of your string and knot it at the base of the loom, in the first notch. Then bring the string up to the opposite notch at the top of the loom. The string then goes around the notch and comes out one notch to the right. Continue this, bringing the string across the loom and around the notches. Make sure you don’t pull the string too tight or it will cause the cardboard to bend.
