Introduction: Carve a Stone Into a Pendant | Heart Shaped Pendant

Rock sure is a hard and not so special object. But fortunately we can carve a rock into something else, like a pendant. This would be a perfect gift idea for your loved ones! I tried to make one for my sister, and she loves it.

Supplies

In this project you are going to need:

  • Stone. The stone I used is a local stone, the Tulungagung marble stone from Indonesia
  • Bench grinder
  • Rotary tool with diamond tip bits
  • Pliers
  • Scissors and cutter (for cutting the design on the paper)

Step 1: Profile

First thing first, I flatened out both sides of the rock using a bench grinder. If you have a belt sander, then it would work as nice. Don't forget to use a mask for safety breathing. It would take some time, depending on the hardness of the rock. Just be patient :D

Now that we have both sides flatened, we're going to need to draw the design on a paper and then cut it. I choose to draw a heart shape (inspiration) . After that, trace the design on the flatened rock and then we're going to remove the outside area of the design using bench grinder or you can also use a trim saw.

Step 2: Carving

Now we got the profile carved in, let's move to the actual carving. Use a rotary toolsto remove the inside area of the design. It's recommended to have water going down to smooth the process, It will make the bits last longer, and no dust, but it's okay even if you don't have that.

Step 3: Polishing

Now we got the complate heart shape pendant. But the last step is polishing the pendant to get a glossy finish. Use the softest sandpaper or you can use a clear lacquer spray to make this happen.

And we're done!
