Introduction: Cat Litter Bucket to Worm Compost Factory Unit
Here's a simple but effective way to reuse those sturdy cat litter buckets and also PET or Tetra Pack roll caps in a fancy, good looking and practical way.
You can do it in a couple of hours considering the time you have to take to let things dry.
Supplies
Things you will need:
- A cat litter bucket which can be replaced with any other plastic bucket like paint or any other 19lts or more capacity plastic container.
- A tetra pak with plastic lid.
- Sandpaper.
- Cyanoacrylate based instant glue.
- Sodium bicarbonate.
- Silicone glue
- Drill with circle cutter drill bit.
Step 1: Clean Empty Litter Bucket.
You will need to clean and dry well your bucket. If using a bucket like the one in the image, remove lid.
You may decorate it as well.
Step 2: Draw a Hole in the Bucket for Drainage.
Draw an inch hole to the bucket in the inferior zone. It will help as drainage of that nutritious juices.
Step 3: Remove Tetra Pack Lid.
Remove tetra pak lid and sand it a bit from the base so it have a nice grip with the glue. Then clean it nice from any grease or dust.
Step 4: Adhere Lid to the Bucket.
- Make sure that your lid can go through the hole otherwise widen it with a file or sandpaper. It should pass thru with a bit of a strong press but fitting nice.
- Sand the bucket and then clean with acetone the zone where lid will be pasted.
- Put a layer of instant glue in the cap base and stick it thru the hole.
- At the outside, add baking soda to the joint and put a drop of instant glue. It will dry immediately and stiffen. Make the same all around to have a nice grip.
- Reinforce the joints on both sides with gun or stick silicone to prevent water leaks.
Step 5: Water Proof It.
After dry, put the cap lid on and close it. Drop some water in and see if its water proof sealed.
Step 6: Draw a Hole on the Bucket Lid.
It's time for the ventilation hole. Draw one in the bucket lid and clean the hole contour with acetone or something to get rid of any grease or dust for the silicone to adhere.
Step 7: Worm Scape and Fly Intruders Proof It.
Go ahead and cut out some pieces of mosquito net, preferably plastic. Glue them in both holes in the internal side with cold silicone or hot pistol silicone for better results being careful not to damage plastic mosquito net with pistol heat. Let it dry.
Step 8: Drop Some Grounds and Kitchen Garbage.
It's now time to drop in some garden and kitchen scraps with some pieces of cardboard with some wet soil. Don't forget pinky sexy worms to accelerate composting. Water it and let it drain. Then close drain and bucket lids and start throwing your kitchen scraps and producing good quality worm compost.
Step 9: Bualá
Here you are.
A nice healthy wormery should have no bad aroma, should be a bit wet but drained, that's why you should open drain lid every week or so to drain it in case it is flooded. If its wet but there's no draining you are good to go.
