I realized this was posted years ago, but following in the well-laid footprints of BIVS2000, I also am compelled to "pile-on" with admiration.

If you ever double-back to the comments for this project, might you give me/us a smidge of detail/clairification of : "It was chainsaw carved from a massive block of 'white deal' and then painted." What is "white deal," please?

Your unique perspective for shape draws me to your projects. Your attention to detail gives you away as very, VERY talented. Might you have a website and/or links to more of your projects?

Wow, thanks so much for the praise :)

This lectern was my mocked up submission to a design competition for the President of Irelands lectern for official use at the state residence. All the entries had to be painted the same colour so that the form itself was evaluated. I intended to carve the final piece from native Irish Oak had I won, but the judges decided they liked some of the other designs better, so mine did not progress. I then helped a classmate build their design which had been chosen. You can see that one later on in the slideshow. Unfortunately the President at the time liked another one better so that one didn't win either. But it is knocking about the presidents house some place being put to use in a different room I think. Don't really know what became of it.

White deal is the timber of the Sitika Spruce tree which is commonly plantation grown in Ireland. It is fairly light, and easy to carve, but not really suitable for furniture. I got some very thick heavy boards and glued them together to make the size of block I needed to get this shape out of. I recall them being at least 12" x 4". I made a little model of what I wanted the shape to be like first after my sketching led me to a kind of tulip shape that had begun as a harp, that I thought represented what Ireland was all about. Then I scaled the drawing up to full scale and sketched it on the big block and got the chainsaw out and started carving, until I had something that was pretty close to the model. A lot of sanding and a bit of painting later I had this! I think it took about 30 hours to make.

Oh and no, I never really bothered with a website. I should probably get around to that because I have made lots of nice stuff since I graduated.

I'm a hobby woodworker and I love working with wood. I saw the lecturn and decided I just had to heap on some praise. Very tricky and VERY well done.

nice!!! I got some nice timber I have milled and will be doing some similar things When I get the time. You obviously had some pretty good equipment and time to make those, If you were heading down to the land of oz (australia) you would be welcome to show me your skills in my shed full of wood. I only have a lot of basic tools but it is amazing what you can make with them.

Yes. It was chainsaw carved from a massive block of white deal and then painted. It was meant only to be a mock up of the real podium which would have been in Brown Oak had it been chosen. Alas it wasn't and we made the other one.
