Introduction: DIY Backyard Bonfire Starter

I (Steph) have been making these fire starters for a few years now because they work so well in my backyard fire pit. They use simple materials that I would normally trash or recycle, so this is a great way to "use what you have" and recycle materials in a new way!

Step 1: Watch the Video

Step 2: Gather Materials

  • Cardboard egg carton (Trader Joes)
  • Dryer Lint (keep a jar by your dryer to collect lint)
  • Floss
  • Old candles or wax
  • Heat gun

Step 3: Cut the Top and Side Off of a Cardboard Egg Carton

Step 4: Fill With Lint From Your Dryer

Step 5: Cut Each Egg Compartment Apart

Step 6: Fold in Sides and Wrap Floss Around the Cardboard

Step 7: Melt Wax and Dip Firestarters

Find an old candle you have around the house or buy some wax. Melt it using a double boiler or use a heat gun. Make sure you melt it in a container that is made for heat.

Once melted, dip each firestarter in the wax to completely coat the cardboard.

Step 8: Let Dry, Start Your Fire!

We love this DIY because you can use materials from around your house that you would normally trash. It's great to make a bunch of these so you always have them on hand for your next bonfire!
