In this Instructable, we'll be creating a detailed 1:200 scale model of the Falcon 9 rocket. This project is perfect for space enthusiasts and model makers who appreciate the craftsmanship and engineering of SpaceX's iconic rocket. Step 1: Anatomy of Falcon 9 Rocket

Understanding the anatomy of the Falcon 9 rocket will help you appreciate the intricate details of your model and guide you through the assembly process.

  • First Stage: The largest part of the rocket, responsible for the initial thrust to escape Earth's atmosphere.
  • Interstage: Connects the first and second stages, and includes mechanisms for stage separation.
  • Second Stage: Carries the payload into orbit after the first stage separation.
  • Payload: The cargo carried by the rocket, often satellites or spacecraft.
  • Fins: Provide aerodynamic stability during flight.
  • Legs: Used for landing the first stage after launch.
  • Engines: Nine engines (Merlin engines) at the bottom of the first stage for propulsion.

Step 2: Measurements and Scaling

To accurately scale down the Falcon 9 rocket to a 1:200 model, we need precise measurements of the actual rocket. We have used detailed blueprints and reference photos from SpaceX and other sources.

  1. Gather detailed blueprints and photos of Falcon 9.
  2. Scale down the dimensions to 1:200.

Step 3: Modeling in Autodesk Fusion 360

Using Autodesk Fusion 360, we will model each part of the Falcon 9 rocket. Below is the list of parts to be modeled:

  • Payload fairing
  • Fins
  • Merlin engines
  • Engine housing
  • Landing legs
  • First Stage
  • Second Stage
  • Interstage
  • Connectors
  • Side strip 1 (optional)
  • Side strip 2 (optional)

The STL files for each part are provided below for 3D printing.


Step 4: 3D Printing the Parts

List of All 3D printed Parts with Quantity and Color:

  • 3* First Stage [white]
  • 6* Connectors [white]
  • 1* Interstage [black]
  • 1* Second Stage [white]
  • 1* Payload fairing [white]
  • 4* Fins [black]
  • 1* Engine housing [black]
  • 4* Landing legs [black]
  • 9* Merlin engines [grey]
  • 1* Side strip 1 [black] (optional)
  • 1* Side strip 2 [black] (optional)


Configuration : (for reference)

  • Layer height - 0.2 mm (0.1mm is recommended)
  • Infill density - 100%
  • Print speed - 50mm/s
  • Printing temperature - 230 C
  • Printing material - PLA+

Step 5: Assemble the First Stage

  • Take the three first-stage pipes for the assembly.
  • Use two connectors (3D printed) to join these pipes together.
  • Apply super glue to ensure a tight fit.


Step 6: Fix the Engines

  • The very bottom part has nine holes for engines.
  • Carefully place each engine in its respective hole.
  • Secure each engine with super glue.


Step 7: Attach the Housing

  • Glue a connector to the top of the Engine housing.
  • Attach this housing to the First stage.

Step 8: Attach the Interstage to First Stage

  • Fix a connector on the bottom of the Interstage using super glue.
  • Attach this Interstage to the First stage.

Step 9: Attach the Fins

  • The Interstage has four holes for Fins.
  • Attach the Fins to the Interstage using superglue.

Step 10: Attach the Landing Legs

  • The Engine housing has four slots for the Legs.
  • Attach the Legs facing upwards using super glue.

Step 11: Attach the Payload to Second Stage

  • Attach a connector on top of the second stage using super glue.
  • Fix the payload to this second stage.

Step 12: Attach the Second Stage to First Stage

  • Fix a connector on the bottom of the second stage using super glue.
  • Attach this second stage to the First stage.

Step 13: Final Touches

  • Add Side strips to the first stage for detailing. (optional)
  • Apply the SpaceX logo to the first stage. (coming soon)
