Introduction: DIY Necklace Pattern (artwork)

About: All what I do I'm doing it for fun šŸŽ© šŸŽ® My name is Chris, I'm an electronics engineer and a Youtuber who likes : Electrical projects šŸ”Œ 3D printing āš™ļø Electronic R&D stuff šŸ”Ž We all know that robots are our ā€¦

After publishing my detailed instructable about How to Create a Small Electronics Badge I thought about how to make this artful work style wearable to give it the appropriate purpose and here I share another PCB artwork design but this one will be something that you can wear and specifically a pattern that you could stick to your necklace, this design could be taken by both girls and boys so enjoy the journey.

As always all needed documents are availble here for FREE : )

Supplies

Software:

I used EasyEDA ECAD tool to make the PCB design

Hadrware:

  • Computer to run the ECAD designer
  • Soldering Iron (with a pointy end tip)
  • Core wire (small section of 0.8mm is recommended)
  • Some small LEDs (0402 package) I used green one but you can pickup other colors
  • SMD Resistor (1KOhm 0603 package)
  • Battery coin cell and its battery holder (CR1220 package)

Step 1: Design the Schematic

If you are familiar with circuits and electronics components then this is probably the most basic circuit that you ever saw! it is built around a coin cell Battery in series with a 1KOhm resistor and two parallel LEDs, obviously the LEDs will be lighting up through the Battery supplied power.

All the used components are Surface Mount Devices (SMD) this will help us to pickup small size parts and keep our designing small enough to fit as necklace Pattern.

Schematic is available in PDF format file:

Step 2: Board Shape Design

Most important part is the Pattern outline shape, here we are making a Skull design and we will need the skull modele that you could get from internet, just pickup any design of your choice.

First and most important, when you upload the image to the PCB drawing area make sure that you set the appropriate x and y size, this will ensure that you are drawing a small pattern

I attached the files that you will need to achieve such artwork, the main image file will help you to draw the board outline (board shape) and then you will need to extract the first layer related to the silkscreen of the board (the white ink) then the third file is the result of extraction of the the third layer related to copper of the board (the golden surface)

after getting the board shape you can distribute the electronics components inside it, in my case I place the LEDs in the middle of the Skull eyes, it will give it shiny looking, the battery holder and the small resistor are place in the buttom side of the board

Do not forget to add the necklace attachement.

I attached the BOM and P&P files of my design:

Step 3: Pattern Assembly

After getting the design produced, you need to prapare your desktop for assembly, make sure that you are using the appropriate tools that I mentioned in the hardware supplies list.

Once you get all the parts assembled to their locations, just put the Battery in its holder and the LED will light up.

Step 4: Stick It to the Necklace

I used a small circular copper piece to attach the Pattern to the Necklace and it is ready for wearing now.
