Introduction: Desk & Workbench Dust/sweepings Collector
A lot of crafts create dust or other mess that needs to be vacuumed or swept up. I wanted an easy way to keep my desk tidy by having an integrated solution that makes clean up quick! It was very important to keep any elements of the system as small and unobtrusive as possible so desk use wasn't compromised whilst it isn't in use.
It is designed to utilise easily accessible plumbing supply hoses (40mm OD) and connectors to create a mini dust collection system.
Supplies
3D printed parts
M3 x30 bolt
2x M3 bolts (any length between 10-20mm)
1x M3 nut
Glue (Superglue used but silicone also very handy)
Step 1: Print the Parts
Download and print the 3D printed components available at: https://www.prusaprinters.org/prints/118012-corner-desk-dust-sweepings-collector
Step 2: Assembly 1
It is very important that the parts are assembled in the correct order otherwise it won't work because some components block others and are glued in place to create an airtight seal.
Use 1 M3 x30mm screw as indicated in the pictures and a nut at the top.
Step 3:
- I recommend doing a dry assembly first just so you can make sure everything is the right way round, fits and no parts are missing (and that my instructions make sense!)
- Slip the retaining ringer the outlet
- Start with one of the curved parts and slip into the flange part of the outlet
- Glue in the 'biscuits' (I couldn't think of a better word so borrowed it from woodworking!)
- Slip in the washer (Ideally printed in TPU but PLA is ok as helps even out and print layers from the connecting parts)
- Glue the second curved part to the assembly
- Push the retaining ring over the assembly & glue in place
- Use 2 M3 screws (any length from 10mm to 20mm) to fix the support collar to the bracket
VERY IMPORTANT: make sure you only glue the right bits so it still works.
Do not glue the washer to anything
Do not glue the rotating section (green in the pictures) to the funnel (blue in the photos) as it's essential for function that this can rotate
Step 4: Assembly - Dust Gate
- Attach the gate holder and glue to the rotating 90degree bend (green in the picture)
- Slide in the gate.
- Glue in the gate stopper. The purpose of this is to stop the gate from falling out
Step 5: Assembly & Fitting
The final assembly is to glue on the corner nut cover.
I recommend fixing the assembly to your desk/workbench before doing this. The centre of the nut at the top of the assembly should roughly align with the inside corner of your desk. Having the nut visible to aid with alignment really helps get it positioned correctly.
Step 6:
Finally screw the 'lock' (dark blue in the picture) to the desk to allow for the assembly to be tidied away when not in use
Step 7:
Plumbing fittings with a 40mm OD will fit into the outlet of the dust gate to connect to a bigger system or just to a vacuum cleaner.
