Everyone in our house rinses the dishes before loading them into the dishwasher. The delema is how to tell if they have been properly sterilized by the dishwasher running. As you can see by the first statement, this is important to us. Finding out that we ate off UNCLEAN dishes. Yuck!
We tried a lot of things, but eventually found a simple solution that works.

Step 1: Add Soap Before Dishes.
As soon as the dishwasher is empty, put the soap in the dispenser.
Then pre-rinse and add dishes.

Step 2: Check for Soap.
Before emptying the dishwasher, check for Soap in the dispenser. If the soap is still there, start the wash cycle and come back later.
No soap, unload, add soap, and repeat.
