Experimenting With Spraypainting Pipes

I've been involved with spraypainting bike frames and I wanted to make some very special looking ones.

I had a little bit of experience with spraypaint but wanted to try very different ways and techniques.

I used scrap PVC pipes from a previous project so they were already sprayed but I oversprayed.

All the techniques work on round objects but will also work on flat surfaces!

Let's get started with the project!

PS: I'm not gonna explain how to properly prep and spray, just how to make special looks.

Supplies

-Spraypaint

-Personal protection

-Protection of environment

Step 1: Multilayer Paint

For this technique, you'll different colors of spray paint, paper and masking tape.

1. Begin with a ground layer.

2. Let dry very good.

3. Tape a piece on paper on the pipe.

4. Overspray with a different color and let it dry.

5. Tape another piece of paper on the pipe.

6. Use a different color to spray the next layer and let it dry.

7. Repeat until you are happy with the amount of colors.

8. Carefully remove the paper and masking tape.

Step 2: Dipping Paint

For this technique, you will need 2 (or more) colors of spraypaint and a cloth with hairs (no idea what to call it).

1. Spray a ground layer (black) and let it dry.

2. Take your cloth and spray with a different color (gold) on it.

3. Lightly tap the paint from the cloth on the pipe, try not to smear it out.

4. Repeat 2 and 3 until you have an even spreading of the second color.

Step 3: Soap Technique

For this technique, you'll need 2 (or more) colors, thick soap or any other thick, sticky liquid and a cleaning rag.

1. Make a ground layer and let it dry. I used 2 colors and made some random sprays.

2. Apply some thick soap and let it spread around the pipe.

3. Spray on a top layer and let it dry.

4. Remove the soap with a wet rag (don't wait too long).

Step 4: Water Droplet Technique

For this technique, you need 2 colors of spray paint and water.

Step 1: sprinkle water droplets on your piece, bigger droplets have a better effect but are harder to keep.

Step 2: Use a light color to spray onto the pipe.

Step 3: Use a dark color to lightly spray from a high angle.

Step 4: Let it dry.

Step 5: Stickers

For this technique, you will need 2 (or more) colors and stickers.

Step 1: Apply a ground layer (this is going to be the color underneath your stickers) and let it dry.

Step 2: Put the stickers on the desired places.

Step 3: Overspray with the top color and let it dry.

Step 4: Carefully remove the stickers.

Tip: If the stickers remove the paint underneath, try to use a better primer or put the stickers first on your shirt.

Step 6: Plastic Wrapping

For this technique, you need 2 colors and plastic food wrapping.

Step 1: Spray a ground layer and let it dry.

Step 2: Prepare a piece of plastic food warping.

Step 3: Spray a top layer on the pipe.

Step 4: Wrap the plastic around the wet pipe.

Step 5: Remove the plastic wrapping and let it dry.

Step 7: Salt Spraying

For this technique, you need 2 colors of spray paint and salt.

Step 1: Spray a ground layer and let it dry.

Step 2: Spray the pipe again with the same color as step 1.

Step 3: Spread out some salt and roll the pipe over the salt.

Step 4: Spray lightly over with a second color and let dry.

Step 5: Remove the salt particles by rubbing your fingers over it.

Step 8: Other Options

There exist many different kinds of spray paint. Each one has different features and gives different results.

It is helpful to experiment with different kinds of spraypaint, I left the golden chrome spraypaint in the rain and it gave some special looks to it.
