Introduction: Food Art Using a Drill
This instructable was inspired by the Power tool kitchen contest. Out of curiosity I checked to see if anyone sells a kitchen power drill for the culinary arts. I only found one called the Twirl food drill. I wanted to create a recipe that used a power tool to achieve a specific purpose to aid in cooking; that another method might not achieve. I reached my goal but the results surprised me. For this instructable I will show how I made different designs for boiled eggs using a power drill. Lets get started.
Step 1: Author's Notes
Originally I had planned on infusing boiled eggs in the shell with jalapenos and food coloring. To achieve this I drilled holes in boiled eggs and cooked them in colored flavored water for 15 minutes. This method failed so I tried boiling peeled eggs in the same water for another 15 minutes with no results. I tried soaking the eggs in the same water in the refrigerator for a couple of hours and noticed a slight hint of jalapeno flavor. I suppose if I had soaked them overnight I might have had some spicy eggs but I discovered the pretty floret eggs and felt they came closer to achieving what I was aiming for, so I did not do any more testing on the jalapeno eggs.
Step 2: Ingredients and Utinsils
Ingredients:
Boiled eggs
White vinegar
Food coloring I used the gel
Flowers, mint, lettuce and carrots or whatever you like for decorating.
Tools:
Drill with 2 small bits
Dish soap
Dish brush
T pin or needle
Lint free towel
Small lid or bowl like mine
In addition you will need a sauce pan, slotted spoon, bowls, measuring spoons, knife, and serving dish.
Step 3: Poke Holes
- Prep work before coloring the eggs:
Poke holes in the boiled eggs using a T pin or needle.
Carefully crack the egg shell to create the crackled look when you color the eggs leaving the shells intact.
Step 4: Dye the Eggs
Method:
Pour warm water in a bowl
Add Food coloring to preference
Add 1 and 1/2 teaspoons of vinegar
Mix
Place eggs in the colored water until your happy with the color
Remove the eggs
Rinse and Peel the eggs and dry with a lint free towel
Place the colored eggs in a bowl
Step 5: Egg With Yolk Florets
Drilling the eggs:
Set one of the least attractive eggs on a lid or dish like I have to stabilize the egg while you drill the holes.
This will be your practice egg because it is tricky to achieve the results that I have.
Drill the egg using the small bit, enough to reach the yolk section of the egg and slowly pull the drill out but stop the drill before you pull the bit out (carefully as to leave the egg yolk at the entrance of the hole.
Be careful not to touch the florets or it will damage the design.
When you are happy with the sample egg you can drill the holes in the remaining eggs using the different methods shown.
Step 6: Flower Egg
Method for flower egg:
Drill the holes as shown using the larger bit but don't drill completely through the egg
Gently rinse the egg if needed and dry with lint free towel
Wash the flowers, carrots, and mint leaves
Cut the carrots into small thin strips
Design the flower to your liking
Step 7: Sunshiine's Final Thoughts
This instructable has been challenging but it seems I always learn something new when I post an instructable. If I had thought about it sooner I would have used cheddar or pepper jack cheese instead of the carrot sticks. This recipe would be great in a salad.
I hope you are inspired to try using a power tool with one of your recipes. If you feel this instructable is worthy of your vote, I will be most grateful if you vote for this entry.
I wish to thank Instructables, our sponsors, contributors, and all my visitors for making this a great place to share. Thanks for stopping by and do have a safe and happy SPRING!!
