In an era where sustainability and homegrown produce are gaining importance, cultivating your own mushrooms can be a rewarding and eco-friendly endeavor. This project delves into the process of growing oyster mushrooms from spawns, offering a step-by-step guide to transforming basic materials into a bountiful harvest. Oyster mushrooms are not only a versatile ingredient in the kitchen but also boast numerous health benefits, making them a valuable addition to any diet. Through this project, I aim to showcase the simplicity and benefits of mushroom cultivation, emphasizing its role in a sustainable farm-to-table lifestyle.

Step 1: Pasteurization

Lime powder is mixed in water during the mushroom cultivation process primarily for the purpose of pasteurization and pH adjustment. Here's why:

  1. Pasteurization: Lime helps in creating an alkaline environment, which is hostile to many harmful bacteria, molds, and fungi that could otherwise compete with or harm the growing mushrooms. By raising the pH of the substrate, lime effectively pasteurizes it, reducing the need for more intense heat treatments.
  2. pH Adjustment: Mushrooms generally prefer a slightly acidic to neutral pH environment for optimal growth. Lime helps to adjust the pH of the substrate to a level that is more favorable for mushroom cultivation. This adjustment also helps in controlling unwanted microbial growth.

Using lime in the water for soaking the substrate (like straw or compost) is a common practice in mushroom farming to ensure a healthier growing environment for the mushrooms.

Step 2: Substrate

  • Soak the substrate in the lime water for 30 mins.
  • Move the substrate from water after 30 mins.
  • Cover them with a plastic sheet and keep them aside for 4 days.

Step 3: Making Batches of Bags

Start with making small batches in a plastic.

  • First in a plastic bag insert a big hand full of substrate.
  • Spread some spawns and cover them with more substrate.
  • Repeat 2-3 layers and fill the bag.

Step 4: Bag Seal

  • after the bag is full, squeeze the top and add some cotton at the brim.
  • squeeze the cotton and wrap it with paper. (this makes the sack little breathable yet locking the moisture level)
  • tie the paper with a rubber-band.
  • finally cover the sacks with a towel to blackout.

Step 5: 4-days Update

  • uncover the towel after 4 days.
  • the fungi growth is vivid.

Step 6: Hanging Materials

  • for this step, we took 3 cords and tied them together on one end and hanged another end to a rod from the ceiling.
  • circle few zip ties.

Step 7: Hanging the Sacks

  • insert the zip ties as rings and sit the sacks.
  • repeat the process and hang all the sacks vertically, one above the other.

Step 8: Slit

  • With help of a new blade, make small cuts on the sides of the sacks.
  • Wait for 4-7 days for the mushrooms to develop.

Step 9: Water Spray

Spray water on the sacks regularly to help retaining a high moisture level

Step 10: Harvest

  • in 7-14 days the mushrooms are fully grown and was ready to harvest.

Here we have made oyster mushrooms, as they are a popular choice for mushroom cultivation due to their fast growth rate and ease of cultivation. This mushrooms can be harvested upto three times before the mycelium expired, with a new crop of mushrooms manifesting every 7-14 days during this time. Oyster mushrooms are a great source of antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals. They are also a good source of protein and fiber.making them an ideal addition to any healthy diet.
