Introduction: Granny Square Cookies
My daughter, who loves to knit and crochet, gave me the idea for these cookies.
Step 1: Cut and Bake
Cut and bake square sugar cookies using your favorite recipe. I used a 3" scalloped square cookie cutter but if you don't have one, you can cut squares using a pizza cutter and a clean plastic ruler.
Step 2: Make Royal Icing
Make a batch of royal icing. I use this recipe posted by Sweetopia. Follow Sweetopia's instructions for thinning the icing using the "10 Second" rule.
Step 3: Outline and Flood
Using the thinned Royal Icing and a pastry bag equipped with a #2 or #3 tip , pipe a square outline around the cookie and then fill in with more thinned icing. Allow to dry for several hours or overnight.
Step 4: Pipe Crocheted Design
Divide remaining icing into separate bowls and tint to desired colors. Using a #1 or #2 tip - pipe a series of little squares in three colors as shown starting with the center square. Then go back and "squiggle" over your lines to give the effect of yarn. Squiggle a border around the whole thing and you're done!
