Introduction: Haze霾---穿戴式空气质量探测器
Haze霾是一款可穿戴式空气质量探测器,它是一声对中国严峻的空气污染问题的高声疾呼。Haze霾通过使用者穿戴上空气侦测器行走在城市中侦测各处不同的污染水平,把空气质量问题转变为一个核心话题,并通过人们对空气质量的关键性讨论去鼓励人们重新思考空气污染问题。
Haze霾 is a wearable air quality detector, which is a strong appeal for people to pay attention to issues of air pollution, a very serious issue facing China today.Haze霾 encourages people to rethink the air pollution crises through a visual performance, as an actor wears the device to detect the air quality around the city, turning the air quality itself into the key communication with which to engage people in critical discussion.

Step 1: 雾霾围城 Haze Haze
北京政府在2013年1月13日北京政府发出了史上首个霾橙色预警信号,在此时,北京已经多天处于重度污染状态。官方媒体新华社报告:“在首都的大部分市区PM2.5水平已经高于每立方米200微克,这已经大大高于安全值。有许多地区已经处于5级重度污染警报。有点地方甚至处于6级最高级污染水平”。至此,空气污染问题已经成为了一场危机。
The Beijing government issued the first orange alert January 13, 2013. At that time, Beijing had had many days with heavy pollution weather. “Levels of PM2.5 particles are above 200 micrograms per cubic meter in most urban areas of the capital, that’s way above safety levels. Many areas have a level 5 "heavy pollution" warning, with some places at level 6, the highest pollution level,” state-run Xinhua news agency reported. Air pollution has become a severe crisis in China.
Step 2: 瘟疫医生的故事 Plague Doctor
Haze的灵感源于一次我和朋友的聊天。有一天我的朋友乔纳森和我聊起了关于瘟疫医生的故事。原来欧洲在中世纪的时候黑死病横行,每天都有很多人死去。在那个黑暗的年代,为黑死病人看病的医生都戴着特制的鸟嘴面具,人们称他们为瘟疫医生。每当有瘟疫医生出现的时候,必然有人会死去。人们看到鸟嘴面具想到的不是别的正是死亡和恐惧。这时我突然萌发了制作一个相似的面具的想法,并在面具中加入控制质量检测功能,让人们认识到空气污染的严重性。
I was inspired by a talk about Plague Doctor with my friend Jonathon. In Medieval Europe, whole of Europe was suffering by Black Death, people were dying very fast. In that darkness, Plague Doctor, who wore pick masks, was the icon of death. Every time, when people saw the pick mask, there must be one dead body. This story fueled me up to make Haze.
Step 3: 第一个原型 First Prototye
第一次尝试制作Haze的原型,我采用了3D打印技术和蓝牙通信。
我用3D打印机按照鼻子的形状制作了第一个模型。我还尝试用ioio板制作一个和手机可以蓝牙通信的空气质量侦测系统。
总结:
- 这个模型的尺寸比较小,只有能包裹住鼻子,下一步应该制作更大尺寸的原型。
- 蓝牙通信功能让收集空气质量并存储在手机成为可能。但是Haze的初衷并不是一个强调功能性的工业级产品,而是艺术品。我想我会把这些功能留到下一阶段再去使用。
My first prototype was a 3D printed mask. I also tried use ioio board to connect the air quality sensor with an Android phone via Bluetooth.
Conclusion:
- the mask was too small to contain electronic parts.
- Haze is an art project, Bluetooth seems like not really necessary. I might use it in the future, but not now.
Step 4: 准备材料 Material
下面我开始正式介绍制作Haze的过程。
第一步是准备材料,Haze制作所需要的主要材料有:
- 铁丝网(废弃的最佳)
- Adafruit Trinket 3.3V Logic
- Adafruit NeoPixel Digital RGB LED Weatherproof Strip 60 LED -1m - WHITE
- Optical Dust Sensor - GP2Y1010AU0F
- 熟石膏绷带

Step 5: 空气质量传感器 Optical Dust Sensor

Step 6: Trinket 控制LED条
我开始尝试用Trinket控制LED条改变颜色。
Trinket是一个和Arduino兼容的主板,因此它的使用方法和Arduino类似,唯一不同的是要使用Adfruit修改过的Arduino软件。Trinket有5v和3.3v两种版本,我选用的是3.3v版本。

Let's try to use Trinket to change LES strip's colors.
Trinket is a small Arduino. The only difference is you have to use Adfruit's version of Arduino to put the code into it.
Trinket has 5v and 3.3v versions. In this case, I use 3.3v version.

Step 7: 组合 Combination
通过上面两部,我们已经把基础打好了。现在我们就把我们的两个核心部件都组合在一起。
为了方便焊接,我自己画了一个电路图。
在焊接后之后为了增加强度,请用热熔胶封装所有的线路。
If you have followed last two steps, you are ready to combine all parts together.
For making soldering easier, I drew a cruise map.
Please make sure you use glue to make all wire connections connected stably.
Step 8: 面具和安装
这是最难的一步,我花费了很多时间制作面具的外形。
刚开始我在材料的选择上烦了愁,因为如果用3D打印,没有办法太耗时消力,而且尺寸太大,没办法一次性打出来。如果用石膏来做,会太重,而且成型困难。最后我选择了用铁丝网来制作这个面具的骨架,中间包裹层保鲜膜用于隔绝空气,最后在最外面包上一层石膏绷带。
当中的过程非常多,耗时也很长,需要极大的耐心和反复实验才最终做成。请仔细观察我的图片,从中你能发现很多细节,它们对整个作品的最后效果都至关重要。
Making the mask is the hardest step in this project.
I had hard time to choose right material. 3D printer was not helpful, because the mask was too big. If I only used plaster, it would be too heavy to wear. Finally, I decided to use chicken wire to make the frame of the mask, the outside is warped by plaster bandage.
The whole process was very long and it needed a lot of patients. Please take a look at my pictures carefully, they can tell a lot than words.
Step 9: 完成
终于完成了全部的设计,戴上Haze开始我们的空气质量之旅吧!
