Introduction: How To: 4 Pronged Bamboo Spear

About: Hi, im a student in a international school in Davao, Philippines

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to have to survive on your own in the wild? Whether you choose to, or are forced to because termites ate your house. Well, if one of those options happen (most likely the 1st one) I've got you covered. In this instructable I am going to show you how to build a fishing spear, and your most trusty weapon: A bamboo spear.

Step 1: Materials

  • A bamboo rod between 1.6 meters to 2.5 meters (5 ft to 6 ft)
  • A machete or a large knife
  • A smaller knife for whittling
  • A couple of sticks, circumference 1 cm (.5 inches)
  • Paracord (optional)

Step 2: 4 Prongs

For the first part of this step, you will need your machete (large knife), bamboo, 2 sticks, and paracord.

To start off this step, you need to set the bamboo upright. After this, take your machete or large knife and hit the bamboo vertically until the bamboo splits. Keep splitting the bamboo until the split is approximately .6 meters (2 feet) of the whole bamboo rod. I advise that you split the bamboo past the first notch you come across. After this, hit the machete into the bamboo perpendicularly to the other cut. Keep splitting the bamboo until the split is the same length as the first cut.

Step 3: Splitting

After making the cuts to the bamboo, you need to take your 2 sticks and wedge them in between the 2 cuts as shown in picture. Push the sticks down 3/4 of the way down the cuts you made in step 2. After this, take your paracord and tie the sticks in place (if you use paracord).

Step 4: Sharpening

Sharpen the prongs with your knife one at a time, until the prongs are sharpened equally. After this step, you are finished and are ready to go hunting or fishing!

Step 5: Conclusion

I hoped you enjoyed this instructable. You should learn this skill if you like camping and need to have some sort of protection. This type of spear can be made out of different wood, but I strongly suggest bamboo because it is easy to split, whittle, and is very strong. This weapon is especially good for spear fishing because the 4 prongs make a target easier to hit. This is my first instructable and I would appreciate feedback explaining how I could make a better one. Thanks for reading!
