Intro: How to Make Cascarones

Cascarones, pronounced kas-ka-ron-ez, are a Mexican tradition used for Easter, Cinco de Mayo and other celebrations. It is an egg shell filled with confetti used to crack over someone's head and shower them with the confetti inside. It might sound strange, but it's actually really fun. Children and adults can both enjoy running around and smashing eggs on their friends' or family's heads.

STEP 1: Materials Needed

You Will Need:

-At least a dozen empty egg shells (of course, the more eggs the better!)
-paper confetti
-glue
-tissue paper
-egg dying kit (optional)

STEP 2: Creating the Empty Egg

The first step is to collect enough eggs. Usually I save the eggs over several weeks from cooking. Instead of cracking the egg in the middle, it is VERY IMPORTANT  to crack the egg at the top to create a very small hole. It's a bit harder to get the yolk out, but just give it a little shake and it'll come out eventually.

After all the yolk and egg whites are out, rinse the inside of the shell with water.

STEP 3: Dye Eggs

Dying the cascarones is fun for the kids and gives the eggs a more festive look. But, it's completely optional.

Let the eggs dry before stuffing them with confetti.

STEP 4: Fill Eggs With Confetti

This step is pretty simple, just stuff all the eggs with confetti. I tried getting my 4 year old niece to help me, but she got bored pretty quickly. The only step she had fun doing was dying the eggs.... and of course breaking them on my head at the end.

STEP 5: Tissue Paper

First, you'll need to cut the tissue paper into small squares. Make sure the square is big enough to fit over the hole.

Next, squirt glue all along the outside rim of the hole.

Finally, cover the hole with the tissue paper square.

STEP 6: Tips on Cracking the Egg

-Crack the egg with the tissue paper side down. It might hurt a bit if you crack it with the bottom side hitting the person's head.

-When cracking on very small children, I suggest breaking the egg in your hand above their head instead of directly on their head. This will prevent any potential boo-boos.

STEP 7: HAVE FUN!

Finally, I keep 4 chickens and had no Idea what to do with the abundance of eggs I've got. there's cupboards full of pickled ones, We have a cooked breakfast every day, but they just keep coming.

A solution has been found, I wonder what else I could fill these with to add an extra surprise?...evil mind working away....of course, I could pretend to have made these, but just leave the eggs raw...maybe even in the windowsill for a few weeks....The girlfried would think this is really funny in her hair :-)

I've also heard of putting small toys in the eggs. Or maybe you can put candy :-)

Cascarones are super fun, but the confetti stays in the hair for days lol. I have long hair, and I can never get it all out in one day.

most women these days appreciate electronic devices too except I don't know which of them will fit in an egg!

My family made these growing up, with bird seed instead of confetti- insisted by my mom, which solved the confetti mess issue, and made it enjoyable for the birds too!

I made these but I dyed the eggs first & blew the contents out by making one very small and one larger hole. I filled them with flour and let the boys go crazy in the yard! The egg shells are good for the soil and the flour is gone in a couple of days! You can also freeze the eggs in silicon cupcake molds, unmold and keep for a month or 2 airtight.
