Introduction: How to DIY a Magnetic Car Mount QI Wireless Charger
In this instructable project, we will try to DIY a magnetic mount QI wireless charger. Most of us if not all have experienced what it's like to run low on battery, or worse run out of battery while we are out and about. If this happens while we are driving, just imagine the potential hazard of having to dig and untangle wires in order to charge our phones.
With this in mind I came up with the idea to combine a magnetic mount and QI wireless charger. This way we can charge our phones by simply placing it on the magnetic dock as shown in the picture.
You may need a QI wireless receiver if your smartphone does not support wireless charging. I have found one from eBay or you can get one here.
For this DIY project you will need to 3D print certain parts. All of the original design files have been uploaded on grabCAD and you can get it here.:)
Here is our official website, if you are interested in Put2Go and you can come here to get more information.
The video below shows how the magnetic mount works:
This is our first version, we have since made revisions until we have arrived to our current version.
We are launching a Kickstarter project in now. You can get one or take a look here.
Our dream is to make a magnetic phone dock with built-in wireless charging, become widely used by everyone. This dock works with both iPhone and Android devices.

Step 1: Prepare Materials
Materials needed are as follows:
- Coil *1
- Round neodymium iron boron magnets(8*3mm) *12
- Transmitting circuit board *1
- 3D printed magnet base *1
- 3D printed case *1
- 3D printed thin board *1
- AB glue *1 (you can use the other glue as well)
- Rubber gasket *1
- QI receiver *1(if your smart phone does not support wireless charging)
Step 2: Prepare the Tools
Tools needed are as follows:
- A 3D printer(to print the 3D Components)
- A soldering iron(to solder the coil)
- A Utility Knife (to cut the Rubber gasket)
- A Diagonal pliers
- A Needle-nose pliers
Step 3: Testing and Assemble the Transmitting Circuit Board
Test the transmitting circuit board bought from eBay and attach it to the 3D printed base with the AB glue.
Unsolder the coil to be used on Step 6.
Here is the technical specification of the transmitting board:
product parameter:
- input voltage: DC 5V
- input current: 1.2-2A
- tansmitting power: 5W
- charge voltage: 5V
- charge current: 500-1000MmA
- transmission distance: 7mm
- charge efficiency: >= 70%
- size: 65mm*31mm*1mm
- weight: 22g
product feature:
- Dynamic Power Limiting 5V 500mA input, 5V 350mA
- output efficiency >= 70%
- support all the QI standard wireless charge device, high efficiency, huge working area, easy to use, few heating, integintegrated over current and over heating protection circuit
Step 4: Printing the Magnet Base, the Case and the Thin Board
You may design your own parts or you can download them here. We have also designed the structure to mount the charger on a car, which you may also download and print.
Our idea is to attach it to a car’s air conditioning vane to keep your device cool while charging. We gave it a sawtooth design to give it more grip and stability. You can use Proe to edit, if you wish to tweak the design to suit your needs better.
Step 5: Assembling the Magnets
Attach the 12 magnets onto the 3D printed magnet base with glue.
Step 6: Soldering the Coil
Solder the coil with the transmitting circuit and test its functions. Our Put2Go charger is use a more stable way to fix the charger than the DIY version.
For QI wireless capable phone you may skip to Step 9. Otherwise, please continue to Step 7.
Step 7: Fixing the Thin Board and the Rubber Mat
Attach the thin board and rubber mat to the case using glue.
Step 8: Purchasing and Assembling the Receiver
If you don’t have a receiver yet, you may purchase one from eBay or here. Just attach the receiver onto your smart phone and test if it is working.
Step 9: Enjoy Your Magnetic Mount QI Wireless Charger
You are now ready to use and enjoy your new magnetic mount QI wireless charger!
