Supplies

You want to make sure your project goes smoothly, so grab all your supplies, including the flush mount ceiling light for the junction box, before starting to prevent last-minute trips to the hardware store. If you’re buying a kit, everything should already be included. If you’re buying each item separately, check out this list for all the accessories and extras you may need.

Following these instructions, you’ll be able to install a flush mount fixture in five easy steps – guaranteed! Just make sure you read all the steps in the flush mount lighting installation instructions before starting.

Step 1: Turn Off Everything

Any time you’re working with electricity, you need to turn off the power at the breaker. So go ahead and flip your light switch to the off position before going over to your breaker box and making sure everything is off there too. Don’t touch the junction box for your flush mount ceiling light before everything is completely off!

Step 2: Attach Your Mounting Plate

Your canopy mounting plate should fit over the junction box hole and screw into place. Feed any conductor wires through the holes in the canopy plate before using the large screws to secure the piece. If you don’t thread the wires through the hole, you won’t be able to attach them to the corresponding wires in the light fixture.

Step 3: Finish Wiring

Now, you’ll need to twist together the two wires for each corresponding section of the junction box and flush-mounted ceiling light. The black wire from the box goes to the black wire on the fixture, white goes with white, and the green ground wire goes to the bare copper ground wire.

Generally, the junction box ground wire is bare copper, but you may need to strip the other wires a bit to get to the copper twists beneath. Once you’ve twisted each of the wire sets together, place the plastic wire nuts over them and secure them in place with electrical tape.

Step 4: Secure Your Canopy

With everything wired together, you can conceal the wires up in the junction box and attach your ceiling canopy to the mounting plate. When installing the flush mount fixture canopy, use the smaller canopy screws – not the plate screws.

Step 5: Screw in the Light Bulb

You’re almost done! Finish installing the flush-mounted fixture when you screw in your preferred light bulbs. Then, simply flip the breaker and turn on your light!

Other Tips

If you’re hoping to customize your sockets or cord colors, you can buy every piece in your fixture separately before installing the flush mount fixture with these same instructions. Now you can create a completely custom light fixture to design your home to your specifications!
