Introduction: How to Make Chocolate Covered Strawberries
Hello, in this episode of In the Kitchen with Matt, I will show you how to make amazing, yummy, chocolate covered strawberries. Click on the picture to watch the video, or follow the steps -
Ingredients -
1 bunch of strawberries
1 chocolate bar (can be any chocolate you want), chocolate candy melts work really great too
1 cup of chocolate chips (again can be whatever you want), or you can use chocolate candy melts
toothpicks
styrofoam
***This works well with dark, milk, or white chocolate, and you can certainly experiment with colored candy melts as well, to add variety. Have fun with it!
Step 1: Wash Your Strawberries
Make sure to wash your strawberries first.
Step 2: Dry Your Strawberries
Then make sure to completely dry your strawberries, I use paper towels, it works out nicely.
Step 3: Melt the Chocolate
Now you want to melt your chocolate. There are a couple of ways you can do this. In this image I am using the double boiler method. So basically I take a little pot, fill it with water about an inch or two deep. Then I take a bowl that is larger then the pot and rest it on top. If your bowl is a little small you can use a little strainer to hold it, but that is really unnecessary. Heat the water at medium high heat. Basically, you just want the water to steam. Then add your chocolate and keep stirring until the chocolate is melted. What happens is the steam from the water heats the bowl and melts the chocolate slowly, so the chocolate does not burn.
Alternatively, you can melt your chocolate in the microwave. To do this take a microwave safe bowl, put your chocolate in there, and microwave for 30 seconds, then stir, then microwave for 20 to 30 seconds then stir, until your chocolate is melted all the way. When there are only a few chunks left use bursts of 10 seconds in the microwave.
Step 4: Add Toothpick to Your Strawberry
Now you want to add toothpicks to the bottom of your strawberry. Just stick them in. You can skip this step if you like. You can just lay them on their side on parchment paper, on a baking sheet if you like. But it will add a flat spot on the side of your strawberry.
Step 5: Grab a Piece of Styrofoam
Use a piece of styrofoam to hold all of your strawberries.
Step 6: Dip Strawberries
Dip your strawberries in the chocolate and place on the styrofoam.
Step 7: Chill in the Refrigerator
Next you chill your chocolate covered strawberries in the fridge. 20 to 30 minutes usually does the trick.
Step 8: Cost Break Down
Here is a cost break down on how much it cost me to make these. Costs will vary depending on your location, what is on sale, etc. Bottom line they are cheaper to make at home, then to buy, plus they are homemade! A perfect treat for a special occasion or parties, or whenever you have the craving. :)
Step 9: Video Tutorial
Here is a video tutorial from my cooking show, showing the process for those of you who would rather just watch a video then follow the outlined steps.
Enjoy!
