Step 1: Materials Required!
You will need:
- Candles / wax - Wick
- Ice chips
- Cardboard containers, like a milk carton
- Scissors
And, of course, you will need also a cooker and some water...
Step 2: Preparing the Mold and the Wick
- For this candle we used a recycled milk carton for a candle mold. Cut the top off the milk carton to make the mold five inches high.
- Then glue the wick to the bottom of the carton with waterproof glue. Fasten with a small pliers or wrap the top of the wick around a pencil.
Step 3: Melt the Wax!
- Melt the wax using a recycled metal food packaging or double broiler.
- When it’s ready to pour, fill the milk carton with ice chips. (Try not to use too many small pieces of ice or your candle might fall apart in the middle.) Pour the hot wax into the mold right over the ice chips. Make sure the wick is centered.
Remember: you’re using ice chips not ice cubes.
Step 4: Peel Off the Carton!
- Let the candle cool completely, about 1 to 2 hours. (This candle cools a lot faster than regular candles since the ice does so much cooling!)
- Remove the mold sealer from the bottom of the carton. Peel the carton away over a bowl or sink and pour off the water.
- Peel off the carton.
- Turn the candle over – the bottom is the top! Trim the candlewick to 1/4”. Trim the wick that is now on the bottom of the candle flush.
Let the candle dry out completely before burning.
