How to Pot Your Plant

Plants are definitely one of my favorite indoor, and outdoor, decorations. They come in many shapes, sizes, and colors. Plants can be used for more than décor; some flowers can be eaten! Every summer, or plant season, I buy another succulent. I have a four-year-old succulent that is currently almost two feet tall! One of the most satisfying things about buying a new plant or already having them, is putting them into a brand new pot. I will be explaining the best way to pot a succulent or any other plant!

Step 1: Supplies

The supplies list for potting a new plant isn’t too long. Soil is the most important, getting the right soil for the plant will make or break how much it grows or how long it lives. Succulents and cacti prefer soil that is half sand and half regular potting soil. Also, have pebbles or rocks at the bottom of the pot helps drain excess water and prevents drowning the plant. Of course, the succulent or plant is needed in this project, they come in all shapes, sizes, and colors. Next, get something to dig a hole in the potted soil. Sometimes I just use my hands or a plastic spoon. A container to put the plant in is needed as well. A few supplies that won’t be needed until after potting would be water, possibly plant food and decorations like small pebbles or stone can be used to decorate the surface of the soil.

Step 2: Step 1

The first step to potting a new succulent or cactus would be to place the small rocks to the bottom of the container. Succulents and cacti need some sort of drainage, so they don’t obtain too much water. This will prevent rotting of the roots and keep the plant happy.

Step 3: Step 2

After placing the rocks, scoop in the sand and soil mixture to the pot, on top of the drainage rocks. Making sure that the soil is very free-draining and aerated is important. Make sure that there is not too much soil, more will be added later.

Step 4: Step 3

Once the soil is in, take a hand or spoon and work the plant into some of the soil. Then, add more soil in top of the roots, making sure that there are no roots exposed and that there is a good layer of soil between the roots and surface. Be sure to lightly pack down the soil to ensure that the plant does not come out.

Step 5: Step 4

This would be the time to add any decorations to the top soil. Placing small, pretty stones can add to the beauty of the new plant. This step is optional, of course, sometimes I use pebbles just to fill in the surface to not show so much soil.

Step 6: Care

When watering succulents, only water them when the soil feels dry. Otherwise, risk of overwatering can occur. Also, make sure they are not in direct sunlight or they can burn. I only water mine roughly, one to two times a week and keep them in a window sill where they don’t get direct rays.

Step 7:

Having plants can make a simple area look so much better. I always like to decorate my room with succulents or other plants. By using these steps, a new plant can be a happy plant in any home.
