Introduction: How to Sell Stickers on Etsy

About: Hi, I am John and I love digital art. I like to create all kind of graphic design resources, tutorials and other cool stuff for free :)

In today's tutorial I will teach you how to sell stickers on Etsy.

If you're anything like me, you love creating and want to turn that passion into a profitable venture. Stickers are a fantastic way to do just that on Etsy. I’ve been through this journey, and I’m here to share everything I’ve learned to help you start and grow your Etsy sticker shop successfully.

I have more experience on how to sell digital stickers on Etsy and other similar marketplaces.

Supplies

To sell stickers on Etsy you need a list of supplies. Some are mandatory and some are optional depending on what type of stickers you are selling. So, for selling Etsy stickers you need the following:

  • Etsy account (it's mandatory)
  • Computer or Laptop (mandatory again)
  • Design software (Adobe Illustrator, Procreate, Midjourney, MockoFun, etc.)
  • High-quality printer (only for printed stickers)
  • Sticker paper (only for printed stickers)
  • Cutting tools (only for printed stickers)
  • Packaging materials (only for printed stickers)

Step 1: Research & Identify Your Niche

First things first, you need to figure out your niche. This was a game-changer for me!

Stickers can range from cute and whimsical to motivational quotes, artistic illustrations, or fandom-based themes. Spend some time on Etsy, see what’s trending, and find where your unique style fits. Analyzing successful shops really helped me see what works and where I could stand out.

With the rise of the artificial intelligence a new market was created. You can now sell not only stickers (digital or printed) but you can also sell AI sticker prompts for AI text generators like Midjourney.

Step 2: Create a Business Plan

Having a business plan helped me stay organized and focused.

Outline your goals, target audience, pricing strategy, and marketing approach. Don’t forget to include details like startup costs, supply sourcing, production time, and profit margins. Trust me, having this roadmap will save you a lot of headaches down the line.

Step 3: Design Your Stickers

This is where the fun begins! I spent countless hours designing high-quality, unique stickers. Tools like Adobe Illustrator and Procreate were my best friends until recently.

The most popular and best-selling types of stickers often include:

  • Cartoon Stickers: Featuring popular characters or unique, cute designs.
  • Emoji Stickers: Expressive and easily recognizable, perfect for various uses.
  • Floral Stickers: Elegant and versatile, used for decoration and crafts.
  • Animal Stickers: Always popular among kids and animal lovers.
  • Holographic Stickers: Eye-catching and trendy, appealing to a wide audience.

If you’re not super confident in your design skills, don’t worry. You can now design stickers using artificial intelligence tools. Incorporating AI into my design process was something new and exciting. And the cool thing is that anyone can do it!

Step 4: AI Sticker Design

Tools like DALL-E, MidJourney, or Artbreeder can generate unique art concepts based on your input. But, you need to know that none of the AI tools available on the market can not make editable text. So, if you want to make name sticker design, quote stickers or other personalized stickers, you have to combine multiple tools.

The MockoFun's AI sticker generator helped me refine my designs. I was also able to make stickers with transparent background without the need of other tools. And if a customer wanted a personalized sticker with custom text, I was able to do that also.

In my tutorial on how to design a sticker I explain everything there is to know about AI sticker design. To create beautiful designs you have to know how to write sticker prompts, how to choose the styles, the colors and so on.

Step 5: Produce Your Stickers

If you decide to sell printed stickers, selecting the right materials is crucial. You can opt for vinyl because of its durability and weather resistance, but paper can be a cost-effective option too. Make sure the materials you choose match your brand’s quality standards.

To print your stickers you have two main options:

  • Print at Home: Invest in a good quality printer and sticker paper. It is cost-effective for small batches.
  • Use a Professional Printing Service: If you have lots of orders, turn to professional services like Sticker Mule and Printful. They offer excellent quality and various options, making it easier to handle larger quantities.

I sell only digital stickers and AI sticker prompts on my shop, so I skipped this step :)

Step 6: Create Your Etsy Account

If you don’t have one yet, create an Etsy account and set up your shop.

Choosing a name that reflects your brand and products is important. It took me a while to find the perfect name, but it was worth it. But, keep in mind that the Etsy shop name is not the most important thing you need to consider.

Step 7: Craft Your Listings

Your Etsy listings are your shop’s front door. Here’s what worked for me:

Listing Title

Make it clear and descriptive with relevant keywords. The maximum length for a title is 140 characters. Titles may not contain more than three words in all capital letters. Here is an example:

"Cute floral printable STICKERS PNG, print and cut sticker, cricut stickers, sticker design"

Listing Photos

Use high-quality images showing your stickers from different angles and in use. Adding a video that presents your item helps a lot.

All images in your shop should be one of these file types: .JPG, .GIF or .PNG. These are the only image file types Etsy supports.

The Etsy photo size for listing images is recommended to be 2000px for the shortest side of the image, and a resolution of 72PPI. Images larger than 1MB in file size may not finish uploading, especially on a slower internet connection.

Add a 3-15 minutes long video per listing to give shoppers a better idea of your product.

Listing Description

Provide detailed information including size, materials, graphic design tools and any other relevant details. The more detailed and clear your description, the fewer inquiries and complaints you'll receive from buyers.

Listing Tags

Use all 13 tags Etsy allows to increase your listing’s visibility in searches.

Step 8: Price Your Stickers

To find the best pricing was tricky at first. Consider your costs (materials, labor, Etsy fees, shipping) and research competitors to ensure your prices are competitive yet profitable.

The price can range between $2 and $30 depending on factors such as the number of stickers, whether they are printed or digital, and any additional services you offer, like customization.

Step 9: Optimize for Search

Use SEO Best Practices

SEO can make or break your Etsy shop. Make sure your titles, tags, and descriptions include keywords that potential buyers might use. I used Etsy's search bar to find popular keywords and naturally incorporated them into my listings.

Encourage Reviews

Positive reviews significantly boosted my shop’s visibility and credibility. Provide excellent customer service and politely ask satisfied customers to leave reviews. It really makes a difference!

Step 10: How to Promote Your Shop on Etsy

Utilize Social Media

Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, and TikTok were amazing for showcasing my stickers. Share photos, videos, and stories to engage with potential customers. Use relevant hashtags to reach a broader audience.

Run Sales and Promotions

Etsy allows you to run sales and promotions, which helped attract new customers and encouraged repeat purchases. Offer discounts, free shipping, or bundle deals to make your shop even more appealing.

There are even sellers on Etsy that help you promote your shop. How cool is that!

Invest in Etsy Ads

I started small with Etsy’s advertising platform and analyzed the results to refine my strategy. It helped increase my shop’s visibility and sales.

Step 11: Manage Your Business

Provide Excellent Customer Service

It is not enough to put your items on sale. You have to make sure that you respond to customer inquiries promptly and professionally. Handling issues or complaints with care helped me maintain a positive reputation.

Track Your Finances

Keeping detailed records of income and expenses was essential. I used accounting software to stay organized, but you can also hire a professional if needed.

Continuously Improve

Regularly reviewing my shop’s performance and customer feedback helped me make necessary improvements. Use this information to refine your products, to update or create new listings, to make bundles and to improve your marketing strategies.

Step 12: In Conclusion

So, the best place to sell stickers online include Amazon, Ebay, CreativeMarket, Gumroad and of course Etsy.

Selling stickers on Etsy can be a rewarding and profitable venture with the right approach. By carefully planning your business, creating high-quality products, optimizing your listings, and effectively marketing your shop, you can turn your passion for stickers into a successful online business. Happy selling!
