Introduction: How to Solve a 4x4 Rubik's Cube

About: I like to solve Rubik's cube so maybe I'll make some "How to Solve". I like building a lot of stuff with cardboard and do some coding too. Hope you enjoy and if any of my instructables have a contest…

Hello everyone!

If you were wondering, there are not a lot of 4x4 Rubik's Cube solves that involves a real cube. Well you came to the right place to do it. Some of the solves require some 3x3 methods. If you haven't seen my 3x3 solve, Click here. Anyway, I'll try to make it easy for you guys to remember and to solve it. Hope you enjoy. Later, I might make a another Rubik's Cube solves if you enjoy this and the 3x3. If you see any moves that involves "()", it means that you can also solve it another way. Remember if you have any questions, comment down and I will answer you. Thank You!

Let's get started!

Supplies

4x4 Rubik's Cube

Know how to solve a 3x3. If don't know, Click here

Step 1: Know Your Cube

Before we move on, we must know what moves in the 4x4. It's a little different but some are the same. This cube add a extra slot so we need to learn a little bit more. As you can see in the first 12 pictures is the main moves for every cube except the circle cubes or something else. For the one that have the 2 cubes together, it's called "w" like for example, I want to move 2 pieces at once. We call that Uw. And you must remember about the prime " ' " if you don't remember, look at the picture that have this symbol " ' ". Sorry if there is a lot of pictures about what moves because I need you guys to learn about the moves and how to solve the 4x4 Rubik's cube. First 12 pictures are main moves, next 13 pictures with "w", and last 10 pictures are the moves that is inside the cube.

Continue to the next step to solve the cube

Step 2: Solve the Middle White Pieces

This step should be pretty easy to solve. Everyone can do this first step. Use everyone cube to solve the white side.

Continue to the next step if you complete this

Step 3: Solve the Yellow Middle

The next step is to solve the yellow middle. This step is a little tricky but not too tricky. The trick you have to do is make a bar like the first picture. As you can see in my first picture, I have a yellow on the right and on the left. So I can move F2, Uw' (d'), (Dw').

Once you have 2 bars lined up either you have the left side, move this. l' (Lowercase L prime), U2 (U2'), l (Lowercase L).

If you have it on the right side, move this. r, U2 (U2'), r'

Continue to the next step if you complete this step

Step 4: Solve the Rest of the Middle Color

Now this step is a little more tricky because you have to solve it without messing up the order of the color and not messing up the white and yellow middle color. Turn your 4x4 Rubik's Cube on the side as shown. You must remember this order in order to solve it or you could messed up the color. Remember this color, Red, Blue, Orange, Green or RBOG. You can start at one color and follow the color. Use the last 2 steps to solve all the color. Make sure you mostly use the main moves, not 2 pieces at once or the inside moves. You can move 2 pieces at once but only use Lw (Lw'), and Rw (Rw') and you can move the inside moves but only l (l')(Lowercase L), r (r').

Once you only have 2 colors left and it looks like the second picture and it must look like it, move this. Rw, U, Rw'.

Continue to the next step if complete

Step 5: Organize the Non Mixed

If step is a little more tricky but if you complete this step, you can finished it yourself. I'll still show you how to solve it with you have problems. I'll try to say it as easy as it can. For these picture, it's not mine but easier if I show you. Click the first picture to see all the cubes.

As you can see on you first cube in the first picture, there are yellow and red on the left side as shown. Also make sure do it on the Left side top where it said "Not matching". If you have that, move this. Uw', R, U, R', Uw

If yours look like the second cube in the first picture but make sure to do it on Right top side where it show this sign " ≠", move this. Uw, L', U', L, Uw'

If yours look like the third cube in the first picture then either move the first move or the second move, move this. R, U', B', R2

Once you match every color but still have the same as the second picture, move this. Dw, R, F', U, R', F, Dw'

Continue to the next step if complete

Step 6: Solve the Whole Middle Color

Now once you have organize all your color in order to solve it, we now try to solve it like a Rubik's Cube.

If you forgot how to properly solve it like a Rubik's Cube, I'll still show you.

If yours look like the first picture, move this. U, R, U', R'

If yours look like the second picture, move this. R, U2, R', U', R, U, R' (R, U, R', U' x3)

If yours look like the third picture, move this. R, U, R', U', R, U2, R', U', R, U, R' (R, U, R', U' x4)

Now, we are gonna solve the rest of the middle side.

If yours look like the fourth picture, move this. U' L', U, L, U, F, U', F'

If yours look like the fifth picture, move this. U, R, U', R', U', F', U, F

If yours look like the sixth picture and make sure after you move it, do either move fourth move or the fifth move. F', U, F, U, R, U', R'

Step 7: Solve the Yellow Side

This part can be hard because of the parity. I'll show you all the ways you can solve the yellow side.

If you have something like the first 3 pictures and also continue to do this step if have the same thing, move this. F, R, U, R', U', F'

If you have something like the middle 4 pictures, move this .R, U, R', U, R, U2, R'

If you have a oll parity that looks similar to the last picture and also make sure you are facing the parity, move this. r', U2, l (lowercase L), F2, l' (lowercase L), F2, r2, U2, r, U2, r', U2, F2, r2, F2

Continue to the next step if you completed the yellow side

Step 8: Solving the Second to Last Layer

Come on we are so close to the end but we got to complete this first. Skip this step if you already have every same color corner and only need to solve it.Also make sure it matches the right color to do it.

If yours look like the first 2 pictures, move this. R', F, R', B2, R, F', R', B2, R2

If yours look like the last picture, move this twice. R', F, R', B2, R, F', R', B2, R2 (x2)

Continue to the last step!!!

Step 9: Solve the Last Layer

You are so close to solve your first 4x4 Rubik's Cube! But first, we need to solve the last layer. Not to be confused about the photo, the first two pictures is just a view of a whole cube.

If you have something like the first picture, move this. F2, U, L, R', F2, R, L', U, F2

If yours look like the second picture, move this and make sure you start where the blue on the left. F2, U', R', L, F2, L, R', U', F2

If you have a pll parity in the third picture, move this and make sure it's on the left side not the right. R, U, R', U', r2, U2, r2, Rw2, r2, u2, (Rw2, U', R, U', R') U, R, U', R'

If you have a oll parity in the fourth picture, move this and make sure you face where the parity is at. r', U2, l (lowercase L), F2, l' (lowercase L), F2, r2, U2, r, U2, r', U2, F2, r2, F2

If you have 2 color switched like the second to last 2 pictures, move this. r2, U2, r2, Rw2r2, U2, Rw2

If you have all color switched, last the last 2 picture, move this. M2, U, M2, U2, M2, U, M2

Step 10: CONGRATULATION!!!
