How to Tie-Dye Frosting for Cupcakes!
Intro: How to Tie-Dye Frosting for Cupcakes!
Tie dyed frosting is any kids' dream! And since I have five kids of my own, I figured it was high time I found a way to tie dye frosting for cupcakes. Follow along for the easy tutorial!
STEP 1:
Lay out a piece of plastic wrap and gather the colors you want to use for the frosting stripes. Don’t forget a little paintbrush - the cheap watercolor ones work great.
STEP 2:
Dip the paintbrush in the gel color and paint stripes down the plastic wrap, about 5-6 inches in length and keeping an inch between each different colored stripe.
STEP 3:
Colorful and stripey like this (I had yet to paint the yellow stripe in this picture ).
STEP 4:
Plop a healthy amount of frosting right over the stripes. It’s ok if it doesn’t cover all the stripes because the
plastic will roll up over it.
plastic will roll up over it.
STEP 5:
Start rolling the plastic wrap over the frosting like a fat frosting log.
STEP 6:
Each colored stripe should come in direct contact with the frosting once it is rolled up.
STEP 7:
Take the ends of the plastic wrap and twist them - kind of like an old-fashioned candy wrapper.
STEP 8:
Prepare the piping bag by snipping the tip and inserting a coupler.
STEP 9:
Thread one end of the frosting log through the piping bag so you can grab the twisted “handle” from the
opening in the bag.
opening in the bag.
STEP 10:
Grab the twisted “handle” and pull it through the bag as tightly as possible.
STEP 11:
Snip the excess plastic as close to the plastic coupler as you can.
STEP 12:
Quickly put on your piping tip (I’m using a Wilton 1M here).
STEP 13:
Attach the outer coupler to secure the tip and you’re almost there!
STEP 14:
Twist the top of the bag and secure with a twist tie or one of those handy-dandy plastic IKEA-like clips.
STEP 15:
For the classic peaked frosted look, start with the frosting on the outside of the cupcake and swirl inward, gently releasing pressure as the frosting tops off.
STEP 16:
Swirled and frosted - just like a tie-dyed cupcake should look!

I did this same concept this weekend with cupcakes but with only one color. The problems I ran into was when reaching into the piping bag to brush in my colors, the mess and getting the color in evenly. I love the way you did it though. Will definitely be trying this as it looks much simpler and less messy than the way I did it!!!
