Introduction: How to Cut Your Own Layered Curly Hair
This instructable will show you how to quickly and easily cut your own layered hair. All it takes is a brush, a hair tie, and a pair of scissors. No need for an extra pair of hands unless you want a friend to help!
My hair backstory:
When I was in the first grade, my mom cut my hair "boy-short" and it was the worst thing ever. I didn't cut my hair again until I got into college. When it grew out, it was a poofy curly frizzy mess which led me to put it in a bun every single day all throughout highschool unless I wanted to spend hours straightening it. In college, my roommate had hair much like mine, so I tried the hair product that she used and it worked great at controlling the frizzy-ness. Soon after, I got tired of the long hair and looked for ways to cut it. I was pleasantly surprised when I found a video on youtube of something similar to this and decided to try it out. I've been cutting my own hair since then.
I am not a professional hair stylist, this is just how I cut my own hair and it works for me.
Step 1: Step 1: Start With Wet Hair
I find it easiest to cut my hair right after a shower when it is still completely wet. This way it is easy to brush your hair into the position we need it to be in in order to cut it.
Step 2: Step 2: Brush Your Hair Upside Down
Bend over at the waist and brush/comb your hair towards the floor. You want to make sure your hair is brushed nice and straight so that your layers will come out even.
Step 3: Step 3: Tie Your Hair in a Ponytail
Gather your hair gently and tie it in a loose ponytail a couple inches away from the top of your head. This is a good time to check if your hair is brush straight so that there are no weird bumps or tangled patches.
Step 4: Step 4: Cut!
You can choose to gently pull the hair tie down to use as a guideline, or you can just go for it and cut. The main priority here is to cut all the hair the same length when it is in this upside down ponytail. I try to make sure that my shortest layer (at the front) is long enough so that if I put my hair into a regular ponytail later, then all of my hair will reach the ponytail
When I first cut my hair like this, the hairs at the back of my head did not reach the hair tie and therefore were not cut along with the rest of the hair. This resulted in uneven layers, so I would recommend either waiting until your hair is a bit longer or not worrying about your shortest layer being cut too short if this is the case.
Step 5: Step 5: Style and Dry
Since my hair is naturally curly and frizzy, I put product in my hair to tame it down. I prefer to use TIGI Catwalk Curl Collection Curlesque Curls Rock Amplifier, but this instructable https://www.instructables.com/id/Curly-Hair-Tips/ does an amazing job of recommending different products to use.
I dispense one pump of product at a time and mix it with a little water and run it through sections of my hair. After that, I just let my hair air dry. You can choose to blow dry your hair if you would like, I'm just too lazy and feel like it makes my hair frizzy to blow dry it.

Step 6: Step 6: Enjoy Your New Haircut!
I have cut my hair like this for a few years now because I love it so much. No more need to pay for $60+ haircuts or trims. I trim my hair every few weeks to avoid getting split ends.
