Improvised Fish Hooks

Once you find a way to get clean water you will need food and insects and plants will only keep you from dying not truly satisfy your hunger. In this instructable I will be showing you how to make improvised fish hooks so you can feed yourself, your family, friends, and maybe even that good looking girl or guy who has setup camp with you.

Step 1: Find the Supplies You Need for the Fish Hook

Depending on what you have on hand or can find in the environment you are in will decide what type of hook you will make. You need a sharp object. I will be using a pin and bone but it can be a nail, pin, wire, seashell, bone or other object you can sharpen that won't break off when the fish is hooked. You will also need a hardwood one to two inches in length and bout one half inch in diameter to secure your sharp object. Finally you will need thread, hemp fibers, reed or something else you can tie to keep the sharp object in place.

Step 2: Preparing the Wood and Hook

First, remove bark and cut to size for the fish you will be catching. Next, cut a notch in the end of the wood deep enough to old your sharp object. After sharpening your hook to a point place it in the notch you cut out of the wood.

Step 3: Tying Everything Together

With your hook in your wood you want to tie a clove hitch (learn your knots to survive!) and wrap your thread around until it holds the hook in place (thicker material less times you need to wrap around (don't waste supplies might be limited!) Wiggle the hook to make sure it is held firmly in place.

Step 4: Go Fish!

Tie your hook to a line and test to make sure it won't fall off (Be careful not to hook yourself). Bait your hook, catch a fish, and enjoy your meal! (easier said than done I know)
