Introduction: MAT Assignment 5

MAT Assignment 5

Step 1: Inspiration of the Module

When coming across this assignment, I thought about the flower model in LEGO immediately. I wanted to create a flower components kits, which you can design various flowers using the components.

Step 2: Design in Rhino

The flower kits consist of two parts, which are the stamens base and the petal components. I planed to have multiple holes on the base surface so that I can attach the petal in the holes using connection parts. I used the same way that I used in the lamp assignment, which was using split function that can carve the pattern in the object's surface. However, when I design the pattern, it was made of 8 circles. When I implemented the split, the circles on the surface got distorted and it was hard to measure the width, which led me to some problems of designing the petal connection part. As for the petal, I watched this tutorial on Youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vr0Dkg9yMlk, which used curves to create a smooth petal. For the connection part, I decided to use a sphere and a cylinder, which can also hide the pointed ends of petals.

Step 3: Printing Attempt NO.1

The First attempt was not smooth. The petal were broken when I was removing the support structure, and the size of connection was too small for the hole on the base surface. Therefore, I decided to scale the peral to a larger size.

Step 4: Printing Attempt No.2

The second try was not bad. The process of removing the support structure was to much easier because the petal was larger, there were more working space between the support and the petal. However, the size of the petal was still not right. I managed to use pliers to squeeze the sides down a lot until the two fit together. The final look was satisfying and I will work further, maybe design more petal components with different shape:)
