Introduction: Make Co2 for Sparkling Water

About: Rudy Explor: Hack, Test, project and experiment is: Simply a quest for discovery. Here are some of my experiences, life hacks, product testing and random weekend

Normally to make the sparkling water you need a Sodastream machine and a cartridge of CO2 (You can also buy bottles of sparkling water ).

I have seen some ways to use baking soda for make Sparkling water.

I have seen this instructable which is really very good : https://www.instructables.com/id/Sparkling-water-at...

I simply saw this way of doing.

No other way to make sparkling water here.

It requires equipment not easy to obtain or that can be expensive.

Here is my remix of how to make sparkling water with products and equipment you already have at home

You will be able to recycle your bottles more needs to throw them away.

I also saw people who tell you to put lemon and directly add the bicarbonate in water, but with this solution you usually do not have or little bubble.

Step 1: You Will Need

For this instructable you will need:

  • vinegar
  • baking soda (sodium bicarbonate)
  • 2 bottles of soda
  • 1 balloon
  • a plastic bag
  • a bike pump
  • a valve
  • a pvc pipe
  • duct tape

But I've never seen the use of CO2 produced by this reaction for something really useful.

Step 2: Make CO2

In previous instructable I showed you how to make your whipped cream with baking soda and vinegar.

The process here is essentially the same.

  1. Pour a little vinegar into the bottom of the soda bottle.
  2. Put the balloon on the funnel and fill of baking soda.
  3. Put the balloon on the neck of the bottle and lower the baking soda in the bottle.

By mixing vinegar and bicarbonate this will produce a large amount of CO2.

The reaction of baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) with vinegar , is completely harmless.

It is only CO2 completely harmless.

______________________

For information in chemistry :
When dissolved in water, sodium bicarbonate separates into sodium (Na +) and bicarbonate ions (HCO3-): NaHCO3 → Na + (aq) + HCO3- (aq)

The reaction of sodium bicarbonate and vinegar is in fact the result of two reactions: a base acid reaction followed by a decomposition reaction. When the two ingredients are mixed, the hydrogen (H +) ions of the vinegar react with the sodium bicarbonate bicarbonate ions for the old chemical called carbonic acid (H2CO3). H + + HCO3 → H2CO3

The carbonic acid thus formed decomposes immediately into a gas, carbon dioxide (CO2), and water (H2O). H2CO3 -> H2O + CO2

Carbon dioxide is responsible for the formation of bubbles and foam when bicarbonate of soda and vinegar are mixed. The whole reaction is frequently written as follows: (Aq) + CH3COOH (aq) → CO2 (g) + H2O (1) + CH3COONa (aq)

Step 3: Prepare the Bottle and the Pump

Now drill the bottle cap about 12mm.

And pass a valve inside, which will make the cap watertight.

Use a zip plastic bag for example, make two notches on each side of the bag.

We will place a bike pump inside.

The air from the pump is sucked in here (See on photo or video).

We will tape the bag on both sides, enclosing the pump inside the bag to seal the suction area.

Use a flexible pvc hose, that you connect to the bag with duct tape, the CO2 will pass through this hose.

Check that there are no leaks.

Take another bottle or the one you used previously by rinsing it and filling it with very cold water.

Leave the water in the fridge if necessary.

Step 4: Compress Co2

Take the balloon with CO2, use a rubber band to close the balloon temporarily.

Pass the other end of the pipe into the end of the balloon and tape it.

The elastic can now be removed. The zip bag inflates with the CO2 of the balloon

All that remains is pumping.

When drinking a soft drink, it is not the bubbles that bite the tongue, but the carbonic acid H2CO3 formed (hence the interest of keeping its carbonated drinks cool and closing them after use so that the flavor Sparkling does not escape).

Carbonic acid is only moderately stable because it dehydrates to form CO2 (and therefore re-decomposes into CO2 and H2O).

The CO2 produced by the chemical reaction of vinegar and sodium bicarbonate is safe. It is used for example: as an organic toothpaste, as an antacid or as a cake yeast ...

But what is the difference between baking soda and sodium bicarbonate? There are none! IT'S THE SAME. ________

The dissolving reaction of CO2 in water When CO2 is dissolved in water it forms a carbonic acid, here is the equation of this chemical reaction: H2O + CO2⇔ H2CO3

This can be called a carbonation reaction because carbonation is the addition of carbon dioxide in a water-based liquid. It is a reaction of equilibrium, that is to say that it can take place in both directions (this explains the double arrow). Indeed if one shakes or heats the bottle containing this solution, the carbonic gas can very well escape. Carbonic acid H2CO3 = H2O + CO2

Step 5: Get Real Sparkling Water

We will check pressure in the bottle 3.6 Bar (52,21 Psi) It's good.

All that remains is to remove some of the pressure with a paper clip, for example.

And you get real soda water.
