Introduction: Mug Spoon Rack
Have you ever been late for work and needed to make a quick cup of coffee but can't find your mug? Here is an easy solution that will look aesthetically pleasing and easier on yourself!
Step 1: Gather Materials
The following items are required for this project:
- 2'x8' wood board
- Wood stain or paint
- 3 metal spoons
- Screwdriver
- Hammer
- #8 3/4in screws
- Paintbrush
- Towel
Items required but not pictured:
- Circular saw
- Drill and drill bit
Step 2: Measure and Cut
For this project the wood board was cut into a 20inch long board
The size of this piece will vary depending on its intended location. Therefore, measure the space on the wall where the spoon rack will go and mark those measurements on the 2'x8' board. After marking your measurements reconfirm that the measurements are correct before cutting. To cut the board, elevate it using two chairs on either side with the line you plan on cutting in between the gap from the chairs. Then cut along the marked lines using a circular saw.
Warning: Working with power tools can be extremely dangerous. Wearing of personal protection equipment is advised.
Step 3: Stain Wood Board
Gather the piece of wood that was cut and apply one coat of stain. Allow board to fully dry before manipulating it.
Wood board can be painted or stained any color. Painting the board may require multiple coats.
Step 4: Flatten Spoons
While waiting for the board to dry, start flattening the spoons. To flatten the spoons take a hammer and continuously strike the spoon against concrete until it becomes flat. Continue this step for the other spoons.
I found it easier to wrap the spoon in a towel then flatten it so the spoon doesn't get scratched up.
Step 5: Drill Screw Holes
To drill the screw holes in the spoon you will need a drill and a 5/32 drill bit. Lay flat spoon on an extra piece of wood from the 2'x8' cut in step 2. Secure handle end of the spoon and begin drilling a hole in the center of the opposite end. Do this for all spoons.
Step 6: Bend Spoons
Bending the spoon requires the most effort. Use the top or the claw of the hammer to slowly work the spoon until it resembles a hook. Start with the bottom handle of the spoon and work your way up to the top of the handle. Do this for the other spoons.
If you bend it directly in half the spoon will break.
Step 7: Secure Spoons to Board
Screw one spoon at the center point of the board then find the midpoint from one end of the board to the center and screw another there. Now do the same for the opposite side.
Step 8: Finished Product
Finished!!! Now you have a spoon rack to attach anywhere in your home to keep coffee mugs within reach.
