Introduction: My DIY Hellboy Costume
About: Currently completing Year 12 VCE and making a replica Team Fortress 2 Sentry Gun.
Hey, this is my first Instructable, I know I've left out some things such as pictures for certain steps, but i never thought of making it an Instructable at the time so I'll try to explain what I did at the best of my ability and i hope you enjoy it. :D
What did I make?
So, my school holds a sports day every year where we get dressed up in our House colours and either compete in events or watch.
Being that I'm in year 12 I thought that would put some effort into what I was going to wear on that day. I was in Wolverton House which is the red house of the school so it seemed fitting to come as Hellboy for the day and make the best costume I possible could with little to no budget.
I would like to say a big thank you to my girlfriend Stephanie for helping me put this together!
How did i make it?
Most of this costume is made from cardboard i had lying around plus a hot glue gun and paint. the other things I used I either already had, borrowed, got for free or bought for quite cheap. for example the coat I had was my father's horse riding coat that he no longer uses and the make up only cost me a few dollars.

I made all of the costume at my house and at my girlfriend's house, whenever I was there we would both work on parts of the costume over the course of a week.
What did you learn?
I managed to find away around money for most parts of this build from asking others for help to finding old things that could be modified to suite what I needed it for, it just requires some imagination and effort. also eyelash glue and getting it in your hair isn't very nice.

Step 1: The Right Hand of Doom
The Right Hand of Doom that I made was made from almost completely cardboard that had been painted and hot glue to a gardening glove.
For this you will need:
- Cardboard and quite allot of it.
- large Cardboard tube that you can put your arm through (i got mine from a poster i had bought)
- Hot glue gun and hot glue sticks
- Some sort of Red enamel Spray paint
- Black, Brown or darker red acrylic pant for the detailing (I chose black and brown)
- Masking tape (to cover up parts of the glove to make it easier to paint
- Scissors or Stanley knife (box cutter)
1. What I did first was measure and cut the poster tube from my wrist just past halfway up my forearm, you can make it shorter if you like.
2. I cut 2 rings both ~ 3 cm (1 or 1 1/4 inch) wide from the tube and then cut though the cuff you have just made so it is still one whole ring but instead is a broken circle, I have a diagram if I have explained this horribly, i probably have though.
3. Glue and Slide a cuff on each side of the arm/wrist and once it has dried paint it red.
4. For the Glove I cut out finger pieces, knuckles and a back hand out of cardboard, painted them red and then hot glue them all to the glove.
Hellboy only has 4 fingers so what I had done is stuck the middle and ring finger together and then made a single finger piece to cover them both.
5. Finally I had my lovely girlfriend paint on the detailing such as the cracks with black and brown acrylic paint.

Step 2: The Samaritan
Hellboy's Gun, The Samaritan, was made from a Nerf Maverick that I had basically repainted.
the only things you will really need are:
- Nerf Maverick or some sort life sized toy revolver.
- Clear, Brown and Silver/Chrome spray paint (primer if you want as well)
- Masking tape
- Stanley Knife/Box Cutters (to trim the excess masking tape off)
- Screw Drivers (to take the gun apart for easier respraying)
1. First off I took apart the gun with a screwdriver and striped out the internals(making sure to keep all parts because i had to put them back in later)
2. I Layed out the left and right shell, cocking grip, barrel and trigger and sprayed a single coat of silver/chrome (but you can use primer if you want) and then i let it dry.
3. Once it dried, I resprayed another coat and waited until it dried and repeated this step about 3 more times but after applying a coat, I use a scrunched piece of paper to scratch up the newly applied paint to add texture.
4. I then applied a normal final coat of silver without scratching it up.
5. When all the pain had dried, I masked off the silver from the gun from the grip so when I painted the grip I didn't put brown anywhere else.
6. Then I Gave the grip the same amount of coats with the brown as with the rest silver and let dry between each coat.
7. I gave the whole gun a complete coat of clear spray and let it dry.
8. I Put everything back together the same as I took it apart but you could go by the internals picture I provided.
the only things you will really need are:

For the horns I made it all out of stuff I had lying around and it was pretty quick and easy to put together. Unfourtunatly i don't have any pictures of the making of the Horns but it's not that hard.

- PVA + Water (paper mache mixture) 1 part pva to 3 parts water or 2 if you want a thicker paste.
- Styrofoam, about 1 cm (0.35 inches) thick
- newspaper or tissue paper (for paper macheing)
- Red Spray paint
- Black, Brown or dark red acrylic paint (for Detailing)
- Spirit gum, Liquid Latex or Eyelash Glue (to stick it to yourself)
1. I Cut out 2x 6cm (2.4 inch) diameter circles out of the Styrofoam.
2. Then i paper macheed the Styrofoam until I thought it will be hard enough when it dries. (if you don't know what paper mache is or how to do it, I'm sure searching it here on instructables may help you.)
3. When it had dried i Spray it with 2 coats of red spray paint and then let that dry.
4. When the paint had dried, My Girlfriend started to add the details of the horn texture.
5. When I was sticking the horns to my head I used Eyelash glue that cost $2 and it did a good job but you can also use spirit gum or liquid latex.

Step 4: The Tail
Unfortunately I didn't document the making of the tail at all, but essentially I created a cheaper version of this.
the changes I made were
- I used red spray paint
- Instead of making a 'butt plate' I just tucked it into my pants
- To make the the tail firm I put a wire through the core of the tail.
Basically what I had done was cut a leg off of a pantihose, stuffed it with fluff from a teddy I had murdered and then put a wire core through the centre and then spray painted it. it was pretty simple and worked quite well.

Step 5: The Belt
The belt was just a quick thing we had done because we couldn't find any fake leather to make a better looking one, so what we did was got a normal black belt and made a logo/belt buckle and glue it on as well as throwing some beads, a cross and a horseshoe on the belt.

Step 6: The Make-Up
So doing the make up wasn't really hard, I basically just smeared on red face paint on my face, ears, neck and some of my chest as well as my left hand fingertips that come our of the gloves.
With the hair I bought and extension for $12 then slicked my hair back and put the extension on then styled with Hellboy's loop bun thing.
The facial hair i just bought $3 fake facial hair and cut it up to fit the right style.

Step 7: Finished and the Cost
Finally what I did was put everything on and together with the addition of some Work boots, a 2 sizes larger black shirt and black jeans and all together it worked out much better than i could of imagined.
So after all this it didn't cost me much and it was a pretty awesome day with a pretty awesome costume.

Everything else I already had such as the Dryza-bone Trench coat, gloves and horseshoes and that stuff.
You can always alter what you do to suit what you already have and I hope you enjoyed my first Instructable

So after all this it didn't cost me much and it was a pretty awesome day with a pretty awesome costume.
