I am from Kerala which a state down south in India. Puttu is a traditional dish of Kerala and is usually made of rice powder. Here I will be showing how to make puttu with Oats. To make it healthier, I have included carrots too.

It is a wholesome nutritional breakfast and tastes really good. Puttu is traditionally made with a Puttu Maker. If you don’t have a Puttu Maker, you can use a steamer. You won’t get the cylindrical shape.

Step 1: Ingredients

Preparation Time - 10 MInutes

Cooking Time - 10 minutes

Oats – 2 Cup

Water – As Needed

Grated coconut – (1/4 Cup)

Carrot – 1

Salt – As needed

The Puttu Maker has three parts. The first is the base where water is filled so that steam is formed while cooking. The cylindrical portion is where you add the Oats mixture. The steamer disc is placed at the bottom of the cylinder.

Step 2: Prepare the Ingredients

Grate the carrot and coconut. Keep it aside.

Step 3: Sprinkle

Take oats, grated coconut and salt in a bowl. Sprinkle some water so that it gets wet. It should be of a crumbly texture. When you take handful of the mix and press it, it should hold shape.

Step 4: Fill

Now take the cylinder and add the disc inside.

Start adding grated coconut. Then begin with the wet Oats.

Step 5: Carrot Layer

You can add grated carrot in between. Always start and end with grated coconut.

Step 6: Steam

Pour half of the bottom vessel with water.

Place the cylinder with oats over the vessel with water.

Place it on the stove on medium heat for 10 minutes.

Once steam starts rising the Oats Puttu is ready.

Step 7: Serve

Once the Puttu is cooked with the help of a knife or a stick push the puttu outside from the disc side.

This is a healthy breakfast and an awesome way to begin the day.

You can have it with banana or any curry.
