Introduction: Old Settler's Beans
Are regular old baked beans too boring for you? Well, you've come to the right place. These beans are flavorful and great for picnics and potlucks. They're tasty and easy too!
Step 1: Ingredients
For this recipe, you'll need a crock pot and...:
Beans:
16 oz.-Great Northern Beans
16 oz.-Kidney beans
16 oz.-Pork and Beans
Meat:
1/2 lb.-Diced Bacon
1/2 lb.-Ground Beef
Sugar-Mixture:
1/3 cup-White Sugar
1/3 cup-Brown Sugar
1/4 cup-Ketchup
1/4 cup-Barbecue Sauce
1 tbsp.-Prepared Mustard
1 tsp.-Cayenne Pepper
1 tsp.-Chili Powder
Step 2: Meat Mixture
Take 1/2 lb. of bacon and dice it. Cut it into pieces no longer than one inch.
Once the bacon is diced, add it to a skillet with the half-pound of ground beef. Using a ground meat chopper or wooden spoon, mix the bacon and beef.
Cover and cook on low.
Step 3: Sugar Mixture
While the meat is cooking, mix up your sugar mixture.
Combine the white and brown sugar, ketchup, barbecue sauce, mustard, chili powder, and pepper in a small bowl.
Set this to the side and prepare your beans.
Step 4: Bean Mixture
Add the Kidney Beans and Great Northern Beans to a strainer. DO NOT ADD THE PORK AND BEANS.
Rinse and drain the Kidney and Great Northern Beans.
Open the can of Pork and Beans and pour into your crock pot.
Next, add the Great Northern and Kidney Beans into your crock pot. Then stir the beans until they're evenly mixed.
Step 5: Drain the Meat Mixture
Once the meat is fully cooked, it's ready to be drained. The ground beef will be done before the bacon, so make sure the bacon is a dark red color and crisp. If the bacon is still pink or soggy, it's not done.
Cover the meat and drain the grease into a small bowl.
Step 6: Combine Sugar Mixture and Meat Mixture
Remove the meat from the heat and stir in the sugar mixture.
Step 7: Combine Meat and Beans
Finally, you're ready to put the meat into the crock pot.
Pour the meat into the bean mixture and stir until evenly combined.
Turn the crock pot on low and cook for at least one hour.
Step 8:
Serve and eat!
These beans are great as a tortilla chip-dip, or just eat with a spoon! They're great either way!
